I let you down
Promise you to change
Then change my mind
And every time I promise you
It will all be fine
It won't be like this next time
Turn into years
Always wait
Helpless tears
Hopeless nights
And all the fears
It will always be like this
Hoping it will someday be enough
To melt my heart
To make me fall in love
I let you down
Promise you to change it all
Then change my mind
And every time I promise you
Soon be fine
It won't be like this next time
The final act
I push too hard
And you crack
Walk away
Don't look back
This time you've really gone
Knowing it can never be enough
My heart's too old
Too hard
Too cold
For your love

I have to tell you I think the meaning for this song is as simple as: She loves him, he doesn't love her but keeps acting as though he does, whether because he thinks he eventually will or so he won't hurt her. Eventually it just has to end, it'll hurt less than letting it go longer.

They are both more emotionaly stable versions of Disintegration from my perspective.

this song is about him wanting to let this girl in, but he can't seem to find it in himself to actually do it.
she obviously waits for him, giving him all of herself hoping to oneday catch his heart.. but it's not enough for him and convincing himself it'll one day be only makes this drag on longer
finally after years of waiting she finally gives up, and even as she walks away.. he tells her 'don't look back'....that althought he's left alone, it's better for her to walk away from a heart thats' grown to old, hard and cold to ever fully love her back..
it's like he lets her go, knowing what he's giving up but also realizing she deserves someone that can love her back....

no i agree with the love in vain stuff she loves him so much she can do anth 4 him, w8 4 yrs 4 him, sacrifin evrth 4him hoping that someday he'll give in 2 her he'll MELT but this can't happen cuz maybe time was wrong so she finally walks away & he's not able 2 stop her cuz he knows he can't give her what she wants it's 2 late 4 this
simple & realistic

When the difference in years don’t allow you go beyond... You can’t. You must not. And on the way, you’re receiving more than you can give. Pain, suffering… The final act must be played.
A marvelous song from disc 3 of Join the dots b-sides and rarities (1992-1996).
