Ha ha ha
Wake up in the dark
The after-taste of anger in the back of my mouth
Spit it on the wall
And cough some more
And scrape my skin with razor blades

And make up in the new blood
And try to look so good
Follow me
Make up in the new blood
And follow me to where the real fun is
Ha ha ha

As stale and selfish as a sick dog
Spurning sex like an animal of god
I'll tear your red hair by the roots
And hold you blazing
Hold you cherished in the dead electric light

Your face
I'll never see you this way again
I captured it so perfectly
As if I knew you'd disappear away

Shake shake shake shake
Shake shake shake shake
Shake dog shake
Shake shake shake shake
Shake shake shake shake
Shake dog shake

You hit me again
You howl and hit me again
The same sharp pain
Wakes me in the dark
And cuts me from my throat to my pounding heart
My heart
My shaking heart
My howl my shake dog

Oh shake dog shake
Shake shake
Shake dog shake

But we slept all night in the virgin's bed
And dreamed of death
And breathed like sick dogs
We slept all night in the virgin's bed
And breathed like death
And dreamed of sick dogs

Shake shake
Shake dog shake

Wake up wake up wake up
Shake dog shake
Wake up wake up wake up
Shake dog shake
Wake up in the new blood
Make up in the new blood
Shake up in the new blood
And follow me to where the real fun is
Shake dog shake

This song reminds me of the opening to Joy Division's CLOSER -- "Atrocity Exhibition" "this is the way, step inside..." -- Robert is inviting us into the madcap world that is THE TOP. While Joy Division's album is one darkly affected by Ian's imminent suicide -- complete desolation and deformation create the macabre circus we are being welcomed into, on THE TOP the circus is seen through the kalaidescope vision of an artist on drugs. At a dark moment, after having been drenched in pharmaceuticals for days, the artist is revealing his visions -- THE TOP has so many colours and is so brutally honest, it doens't sugar coat -- it is the vision of an artist at a moment in his life.

only 5 comments does not give this song justice. Why do people only seem te recognize lullaby and pictures of you and stuff like that? This song deserves more attention

can someone tell me, the top, the sounds on it...are they all similiar to The Caterpillar, that being the only song i've heard from the particular album...i keep saving up money for The Top and spending it on other cure albums at the last minute for some reason...next time

Narrative prose about a fictional AND true occurrence. Part inside-voice and part recollection of events; emotionally representative and pure, like the instincts of a wild animal under domestic intention. Rad.

    Song Fact

I read somewhere in a book about Witchcraft connected to Gerald Kelly, that the song was about Aleister Crowley in part at his Abbey of Thelma in Cicily. Am not 100% sure which book I think it may have been a Geralk Kelly biography.Anyway Kelly knew Crowley from Cambridge. When Crowley went to Cicily he was perportted to be doing sex magick with a 'K' with others.Whildt drawing and painting weird, dark murals on the walls of nightmare scenes, the idea being that you could overcome your fears by looking at pictures of them. Hence the lyrics "We slept all night in the Virgin's bed and dreamed of death and breathed like sick dogs" and so on. The original LP copy of The Top where this song is the opening track originally featured a nasty demonic looking six pointed star as well as other symbols. Robert virtually produced a lot of this album on his own playing bass parts etc.using session drummers like he had with Vince Ely on some of the Japanese Whispers songs. Eventually Porl Thompson Andy Anderson and Phillip Thorn alley joined but he was still not talking to Simon Gallup, after they're bust up during the "Pornography" Tour. I hope one day to find this book again and update this. A very dark song indeed and used recently on they're latest Tour.2023

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
