@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

With the nostalgic sentiment and the overall tone of the song, I think Keane is attempting to express a Portuguese term known as 'saudade', which does not have a direct English translation but roughly means "that which we remember because it is gone."
According to Wikipedia: "Some people view the song as being about an unhealthy relationship but when viewed with the knowledge of her sexual orientation and its legality at the time, it takes on a different possible context."

Her voice is so raw and so real that almost everything she sings, even songs with the most simple melodies, seem to reach right down to your soul and touch you on the most personal level. This song is a great example.
what awesome use of guitar in this song. You can just feel yourself getting lifted up in the music just before that last 'two weeks in a virginia jail'. You gotta love tracy chapman
I love this song. It makes me think of a movie I saw as a kid, "Badlands." It starred Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek as young lovers on a murder spree. It also kinda reminds me of "Sugarland Express" with Goldie Hawn.
I love the country, rural sound and feel to the song. The mentionings of Virginia add to that. It's also very sad. The narrator is totally in love, totally loyal to her lover, even though that mate is probably nothing but trouble. The narrator probably never got much love at all, so she holds steadfastly onto whatever love she can get, even if it is harmful to her.
Maybe it's just me, but the use of the word "lover" makes me wonder if this is about a gay couple. I suppose that could just be my connotation of the word. I think it's somewhat sophisticated, and I don't imagine the narrator of the song being very sophisticated. Also, where I come from "lover" is/was often the term of choice to describe a gay person's special friend.
All the sacrifices she made for her love, who, to her, is worth every one.
