Piper, Piper the red red worm
awoke last night to the sound of the storm
the words are the words I sailed upon.

General Commentbuilding off of what subskin said... i bet tom wrote "piper piper the red red worm" down because he kept hearing it in his dream, and thats wat the other two lines meant... like he literally woke up to the sound of a storm and wrote those words because he didnt want to forget them.. they cudve been important in his dream. or perhaps the sound of the storm made him think he was sailing ina boat until it woke him up. maybe piper the red worm was the name of the boat. ad he sailed on it. until he woek up to the sound of the storm.

right there is an example of reading-too-much-into-it.

    General Commentamazing song!

as for the meaning, to me at least, he lives what he plays. and isn't that all that matters? live your life the way you would dream it to be, even if you were awoken by the "sound of a storm". i.e. things didn't really go your way.

General CommentPiper is a brand of aircraft. It could be that Tom was flying, or "sailing upon" the "word" which is "piper". He was sailing upon a Piper, or flying in an airplane. The color scheme for many of these aircraft has a curvy accent stripe, which could have been red.
