Angry Angel Lyrics

This is an obsession
A kind of aggression with himself
It's the way hell always be
He loves to rebel
To go against his ten commandments
For him, that's just being free

And he always will get his thrills
The only way he knows how
Well, it might make you frown
But he loves, being that dove
Roaming where he cares to go
To a state of mind that no one knows

Over there
Stands my angry angel
And he's shaking his head
In disgrace of me
Over there stands my angry angel
And he's frowning like hell
But I'm not feeling guilty

Shine, shine, shine, shine
Rain, rain, rain, rain
Light, light, light, light

Over and over again
More and more for the pain
To release himself from this shell
Time after time, you may glare at him
For the way he looks
Like something drawn up from hell

But that's just his cover
From what is under it
All his imagination
His passion for a creation
Which he has discovered
Uncovered a world
Of amazing sensations
His own little nation

I don't care...

Over there
Stands my angry angel
And he's shaking his head
In disgrace of me
Over there stands my angry angel
And he's frowning like hell
But I'm not feeling guilty

I'm not feeling guilty
'Cause I don't care
I'm not feeling guilty
'Cause I don't care

I'm flying...

I have to say I dissagree with all of you actually. When I read this I didn't think of the angry angel as another person. From my point of view the angry angel is her inner anger.

"He loves to rebel To go against his ten commandments For him, that's just being free" It's when she lets her anger outside and just feeds it.

"But that's just his cover From what is under it All his imagination His passion for a creation Which he has discovered Uncovered a world Of amazing sensations His own little nation" I think that part says that inside the anger and frustration lies a great power that can be used in a good way. To be creative etc.

"I'm not feeling guilty 'Cause I don't care" That part, for me, means that she knows her inner anger and is fully aware of him wanting to get out. Still she can control him and use him in the way she wants to without feeling guilt, 'cause he's a part of her and she's in control of herself.

Well, that's just the way I thought about it:)

My Interpretation
Cover art for Angry Angel lyrics by Imogen Heap

to me this is about her liking/loving someone who is much disapproved of by others. he is careless and frivolous in the way he lives his life and the 'angry angel' she speaks of is basically her being concious that he is a loose canon, and that she is disappointing people by associating with him. all the same, she sees that people disapprove and still loves it.

in the second verse, it almost sees like she envies the way that he simply doesn't care - she seems to admire him for his breaking free.

it seems to me that a big part of what she likes about him is his incessant self destructive behaviour that momentarily feels good. there could be references here to some sort of drug abuse, but i'm not sure.

either wayyy, amazeee song!

i agree with "eureka!"

when i read this, it reminded me of a situation of mine and i think she really is saying how there is this really destructive guy who isnt happy with himself and no matter how much her " good side" or her "friends" want her to stop shes " not feeling guilty"

and i can relate

She's talking about a boy that is careless about how he lives his life , " a kind of agression against himself" I see this comment as her saying this " agression against himself" can mean drug abuse, constant partners etc. She's saying he loves the thrill of doing all these destructive things to himself. She feels hurt , and probably has tryed to talk him out of it. Her " angry angel " that is looking at him with " discrace" Represents her Conscious inside . On the oustide she says " i'm not feelin guilty" because she has tryed her best to stop him.

" To release himself from this shell" She's saying he's a shallow guy who abuses his body and soul so that he can feel real. From his maybe even " boring self"

Her last line " I don't care i'm flying"

She decides or already decided in the song that She's not going to care. Because she did all she could . And because she let that burden of watching over him trying to help him she's " flying".

This is my favourite Imogen Heap song.

i wondered what "in disgrace of me" meant, and it led me to this interpretation of this song:

she admires/loves this guy regardless of the fact that he is self-distructive. he finds complete happiness in going against the grain, as seen in the lyrics "...creation Which he has discovered Uncovered a world Of amazing sensations His own little nation"

she seems to want him to be better, and be more accepted. yet at the same time she sees him as an angel and doesn't care that he's frowning or unhappy with his surroundings. she doesn't care because she knows the true happiness he is able to find by being independent of others' opinions. so he may think he's unhappy, but she views him as lucky in a way. get it? haha.

"in disgrace of me" still needs some work, but i would guess he is losing respect for her because either she wants to be like him, or she is still stuck in confining to others' views. im guessing the former - she wants to be like him - because she doesn't feel guilty and she's flying at the end.

and of course, a bit of self-relection went into this. i am in love with my friend who is so independent of opinions and so strong. but of course, he lets me see his weak side every now and then, and gets mad in a way when i tell him i would love to be like him haha.

There are two people speaking in the song, one a troublemaker and a self-righeous person that are dating each other and arguing with each other.

Song Meaning
Cover art for Angry Angel lyrics by Imogen Heap

I think in this song, she means her "angry angel" is another part of herself. Perhaps her more destructive and careless side. Maybe when she say's "He's frowning like hell in disgrace of me" She means she didn't listen to her "bad' side, and when she say's "I'm not feeling guilty" she means she chose the right path.

I don't think this helps much, but I think the printed lyrics are not quite right. I think she refers to the 'angry angel' as both male and female: the angel is 'he' in the first verse and 'she' in the second verse'. This is clearer in the live version from 2007 recently released on iTunes. In introducing the song she also says she is not going to explain it 'because my mum is in the audience'!
