"Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart" as written by Dean Deleo, Robert Emile Deleo, Eric Kretz and Scott Richard Weiland....
Don't cut out my paper heart, I ain't dyin' anyway
Take a look at eye full towers
Never trust them dirty liars
Sippin' lemon yellow booze 'ole' leadbelly sings the blues
All dressed up on wedding day keep on trippin' anyway

I am I am I said I'm not myself, but I'm not dead and I'm not for sale
So keep your bankroll lottery eat your salad day deathbed motorcade

Fake the heat and scratch the itch
Skinned up knees and salty lips
I'll breathe your life vicks vapor life
And when you binge I purge alike
Let go it's harder holding on
One more trip and I'll be gone

So keep your head up
Keep it on, just a whisper I'll be gone
Take a breath and make it big
It's the last you'll ever get
Break your neck with diamond noose
It's the last you'll ever choose

I am I am I said I'm not myself, but I'm not dead and I'm not for sale
Hold me closer, closer let me go let me be just let me be

Song Meaningscott has said its about a bad experience doing drugs. all the lyrics arent supposed to make sense, theyre just what was going through his mind while he was tripping. theyre just a load of frenzied confused ideas and delusions

My InterpretationI could be wrong, but this song has tiny hints of heroin all over it.

By the time the Tiny Music hit shelves, Weiland already had a documented habit.

“Don’t cut out my paper heart / I ain’t dyin' anyway” —> Using has already caused others to predict his demise.

“All dressed up on wedding day / keep on tripping anyway” —> A big event in his life, one that should cause him to change. But he’s still using.

“Fake the heat / and scratch the itch” —> Satisfy the urge to use (“scratch the itch”), possible allusion to ‘itchy’ sensation of opiates

“When you binge / I purge alike” —> On and off the wagon, perhaps with another user

“One more trip / And I’ll be gone” —> Next time he overdoes it, he could overdose.

“Break your neck with diamond noose” —> Kill yourself for a great high

“I’m not myself, but I’m not dead and I’m not for sale” —> Bargaining with himself and others.

“Hold me closer / let me go” —> Going between “help me” and “leave me alone”

Scott said of the song, “it reflects my hunger for redemption”.

Or … could just be documenting a bad acid trip. We’ll never know.

General CommentI think this song may be about not selling out to what everyone else wants the music to be.
