Swinging on the lifeline, fraying bits of twine
Entangled in the remnants of the knot I left behind
And asking you to help me make it finally unwind
But God never listens to what I say
God never listens to what I say
And you don't get a refund if you overpray
And when the line is breaking and when I'm near the end
When all the time spent leading I've been following instead
When all my thoughts and memories are left hanging by a thread
repeat chorus
Stranded on this slender string
The minutes seem to last a lifetime
Dangling here between the light above
And blue below that drags me down
repeat chorus

Like Bug, another vaguely anti-religion tune by Marshall.

god never listens... you don't get your time back if you spend it all praying...

This song is one of my favourites. The lyrics are impressive, strong as always. The tune is just overwhealming. Beatiful.

I think it's about trying to do things your way. You can improve yourself by becoming more centered with God. It's easy to slip up and fuck up. We can try to do things our way but that doesn't always lead you in the right direction. The narrator is disillusioned with praying obviously. It's easy to pray and ask God for help when you've tied a knot and you need help unwinding it. It's harder to pray when you're doing well.
