"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
This one dimension of myself
Has hurt the ones I love
And I have come to shut you out
And the God I fear above
And I will make my way
Through the lines drawn on the floor
It goes away so quickly now
But I've been gone before
And everything I do
And everything I say
They come in come conflict
Even as I sing this song today
And I know I've let you down
Please know it's not your fault
Has hurt the ones I love
And I have come to shut you out
And the God I fear above
And I will make my way
Through the lines drawn on the floor
It goes away so quickly now
But I've been gone before
And everything I do
And everything I say
They come in come conflict
Even as I sing this song today
And I know I've let you down
Please know it's not your fault

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

And everything I do, And everything I say, They come in come conflict even as I sing this song today, And I know I've let you down Please know its not your fault Because knowing you has made me halfway decent by default!
So let me go and find my sleep, When I wake up it won't be me So let me go and find my sleep, When I wake up it won't be....
No it won't be me!
And everything I do, And everything I say, They come in come conflict even as I sing this song today, And I know I've let you down Please know its not your fault Because loving me has made me halfway decent by default!
So let me go and find my sleep, When I wake up it won't be me So let me go and find my sleep, When I wake up it won't be.
That's pretty much the lyrics to the whole song! The only thing I can't fully work out is the 'if I'm asleep'/'find my sleep' parts... but I think 'find my sleep' makes more sense... I think it's stupid how on the official AK site they don't have the full proper lyrics!!!! Esepcially so because this song absolutely f-ckin' rocks and I play it on repeat all day... great stuff.

Where is the rest of the lyrics?
i'm not 100% sure but i think the rest of the lyrics are something like:
so let me ??(call?, come?) and ??(fall?) my sleep when i wake up it won't be me so let me ? and ? my sleep when i wake up it won't be me no it won't be me and everything i do and everything i say they come in conflict even as i sing this song today and i know i've let you down please know it's not your fault cause loving me has made me halfway decent by default so let me ? and ? my sleep when i wake up it won't be so let me ? and ? my sleep when i wake up it won't be me so let me ? and ? my sleep when i wake up it won't be
i'm not too sure i'm at work so i didn't have the chance to replay it and write the lyrics down but thats what i heard. let me know what you think.
Yeah I agree with you Awake&dreaming...But i dont know what those question marks are either. Sometimes it sounds like "let me go and find my sleep" or "let me go and fall asleep" but the more i listen to it the more I think its 'find my sleep' ahhhhh...i hate when i dont know the lyrics!!
so let me GO if IM asleep...
its about ducks i think..
yeah this song rocks! i love this dudes voice! i also really like the beat of the song! hell yeah!
this song is freakin awesome. I love it. Audio Karate rules. ROSEMEAD!!
I think its about realising that you've could have been a better person and decided to wake up tomorrow and correct your mistakes.
I love the half-time bit when the drums finally come in.
This song is about that little voice in your head, who you don't want to listen to, but you do. It tells you to push those who care about you away("There's one dimension of myself that's hurt the ones I love"). To generally be a jerk to everyone. Sometimes that voice is there, sometimes it goes away("It goes away so quickly now, but I've been gone before"). It's about the artist trying to shut out that voice("I have come to shut you out"), because he has a reason to stop listening, that special someone who saw something special in him, and accepts him, loves him, even with his flaws("Loving me has made me halfway decent by default")
At least, that's what it means to me, as I went through such a personal struggle
