So far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore?
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
It doesn't help to know you're just time away
Long ago, I reached for you and there you stood
Holding you again could only do me good
How I wish I could, but you're so far away

One more song about movin' along the highway
Can't say much of anything that's new
If I could only work this life out my way
I'd rather spend it bein' close to you

But you're so far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore?
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
It doesn't help to know you're so far away
Yeah, you're so far away

Travelin' around sure gets me down and lonely
Nothin' else to do but close my mind
I sure hope the road don't come to own me
There's so many dreams I've yet to find

But you're so far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore?
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
And it doesn't help to know you're so far away
Yeah, you're so far away
Yeah, you're so far away

General CommentThis song is pretty much one of my favourite songs ever. I can't believe Carole King hasn't got more comments, she's amazing! Such a talented songwriter...

This song is just so sad and beautiful.

General CommentVery moving - from a time long before cell phones, skype, internet, email.......
Writing letters and paying out the a$$ for long distance phone calls was the only way to stay in touch. When someone was "far away" they might as well have been on Mars.

General Commentthis is one of my favorite carole king songs. i know it's supposed to be a breakup song, but i strongly associate it with my kind of more than friend who lives in new york, and i'm in chicago. so she's litteraly far away.

this line is the strongest for me:
"long ago i reached for you and there you stood
holding you again could only do me good"
she gives the best hugs in the world, and i would kill to be back in her arms.

this song is so beautifully written.

General CommentAlways like to think this is about family - how they have to break up due to working in different parts of the country and how hard it can be to maintain a relationship when they're not there. Almost certainly it's about a partner but that's just the way I like to think about it.

General CommentA great break up song.. It was nice to see Carol King step into the spotlight with Tapestry. I like the nostalgic quality of this song as she expresses her sorrow that he's not there today but was so close just "yesterday".
