Smoke Rings in the Dark

Gary is talking about how he loves this woman we doesn't love him back, his "love" turned to Smoke Rings. What does he mean by that?

he's referring to their love as a flame "You tried to find a spark of the flame that burned", and since they no longer love eachother the flame turned into smoke rings

Good song to listen to when you're feeling depressed or lonely.

^^^^^^^^^^ The beginning of the song is saying that he has come to realize that they are not meant for each other......he tried to make her love him, she tried to find the spark....but the flame burned out and turned into smoke rings in the dark.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The second part is talking about how he is literally setting on the front steps, lonely and contemplating what to do next.....it goes on to say that he knows he must leave her because their love is already gone and all hes gonna leave are the pieces of his heart (obviously shook up about the whole thing) and all he will leave are smoke rings in the dark.

This last part is him coming to the realization that their love is in a standstill.....and then he leaves her saying he'll go easy on her heart......hes just gonna touch her face then drift away like smoke rings in the dark.

Sometimes this is just the way life goes, it sucks, but its life.

This is one of my favorite songs. I can just feel the emotion streaming out when I listen to it. I especially love the beginning to the chorus. "I-I-I know I must be going." Gary really puts on a great concert as well. Good stuff.

I think thats a pretty well summed up interpretation of the song. I even found the song at the right time...I've asked out 3 girls in HighSchool last year, and they all declined. Gawd ths song gets me emotional. I nearly cried in College lmao.
