Sally Simpson Lyrics

Sally Simpson (From Tommy)

-The Who

Outside the houes, Mr. Simpson announced
That Sally couldn't go to the meeting
He went on reading his Rule Rolls Royce
And she ran inside weeping

She got to her room and tears splashed the picture
Of the new mesiah
She picked up a book of her father's life
And threw it one the fire

Chorus:
She knew from the start, deep down in her heart,
That she and Tommy were worlds apart
But her mother said, "Never mind, your part
Is to be what you'll be."

The theme of the sermon was "Come unto me,
and love will find a way"
So Sally decided to ignore her Dad
And sneek out anyway

She spent all afternoon getting ready
And decided she'd try to touch him
Then maybe he'd see that she was free
And talk to her this Sunday

Chorus

She arrived at six and the place was swinging
To gospel music by nine.
Group after group appeared on the stage
And Sally just sat there crying

She bit her nails looking pretty as a picture
Right in the very front row
Then a DJ wearing a blazer with a badge
Came on and said "Here we go!"

The crowd went crazy
As Tommy hit the stage
Little Sally got lost as the police bossed
The crowd back in a rage

Soon the atmosphere was cooler
And Tommy gave a lesson
Sally just had to let him know she loved him
And lept up on the rostrum

She across stage to the spotlit figure
And brushed him on the face
Tommy whirled round as a uniformed man
Threw her off the stage

Chorus

Her cheek hit a chair, and blood trickled down
Mingling with her tears
Tommy carried on preaching
And his voice filled Sally's ears

She caught his eye, she had to try
But he couldn't see through the lights
Her face was gashed and the ambulance men
Had to carry her out that night

The croud went crazy
As Tommy left the stage
Little Sally was lost for the price of a touch
And a gash across her face, oo

16 stitches put her right and her Dad said
"Don't say I didn't warn ya!"
Sally got married to a rock musician
She met in California

Tommy always talks about the day
The dicsiples all went wild
Sally still carries a scar on her cheek
To remind her of his smile

Chorus

tommy5454, here is what happens in the last half of Tommy, to the best of my understanding.

Tommy is treated by the specialist, and he returns home and is forced by either his mother or stepfather to stare into the mirror. He has stared blankly into the mirror his whole life, and they are hoping that the radical new treatment that was tried out on him is going to enable him to see. They ask if Tommy can hear them, and finally, Tommy smashes the mirror as he sees his own face for the first time in his entire life.

He instantly becomes a "Sensation", as people are mesmerized by the formerly deaf, dumb, and blind pinball wizard who has so much to give to the world. People swarm to him, as he is truly a remarkable young man, and people begin to view him as a messiah-type figure. The news reports about a "Miracle Cure", and Tommy's popularity rises. "Sally Simpson" is a sad story of a girl who fell in love with Tommy and wanted to follow him, but it didn't work out in the end. Tommy proclaims that he is free to the whole world. In the song "I'm Free", I think it is just Tommy running around and rocking out in total jubilation.

In "Welcome", Tommy decides to invite his followers to his house so he can teach them about how to live life to the fullest. He understands he is an important person and that people will listen to what he has to say. "Tommy's Holiday Camp" is a little twisted, as Uncle Ernie appears to have some sort of intererst in Tommy's camp. The followers flock to the camp, but for whatever reason decide that a new religion lead by Tommy is not for them, and they revolt. Tommy is all alone, and the album ends with "See Me Feel Me/Listening to You", which, to be a honest with you, I'm a little confused about myself. Tommy and his family have just been beaten and raped by his followers, but the recurring lines of "listening to you, i get the music, gazing at you, i get the heat, following you, i climb the mountain, i get excitement at your feet - right behind you, i see the millions, on you, i see the glory, from you, i get opinions, from you, i get the story." These words are reflective of Tommy's followers, but they have just forsaken him, and don't want to take it from him anymore. I think the ending song just kind of sums up the whole vibe of the album, that Tommy was a magical person who truly had a lot to give to the world, even if it didn't all work out in the end.

Hope that helps!

Sally Simpson basically is a display of the hysteria that Tommy has caused since he's become free.

rushmore, I'm pretty sure it was the doctor who told Tommy to go to the mirror and the mother who smashed it. That's what the liner notes say. They're not lyrically perfect but I think we can rely on them to get characters right.

I was thinking along the same lines as Geek UK, but, eh, either way gets the job done.
