It's only when I lose myself with someone else
That I find myself
I find myself
It's only when I lose myself with someone else
That I find myself
I find myself

Something beautiful is happening inside for me
Something sensual, it's full of fire and mystery
I feel hypnotized, I feel paralyzed
I have found heaven
There's a thousand reasons
Why I shouldn't spend my time with you
For every reason not to be here I can think of two
To keep me hanging on
Feeling nothing's wrong
Inside your heaven

It's only when I lose myself with someone else
That I find myself
I find myself
It's only when I lose myself with someone else
That I find myself
I find myself

I can feel the emptiness inside me fade and disappear
There's a feeling of contentment now that you are here
I feel satisfied
I belong inside
Your velvet heaven

Did I need to sell my soul
For pleasure like this?

Did I have to lose control
To treasure your kiss?

Did I need to place my heart
In the palm of your hand

Before I could even start
To understand?

It's only when I lose myself with someone else
That I find myself
I find myself
It's only when I lose myself with someone else
That I find myself
I find myself
It's only when I lose myself with someone else
That I find myself
I find myself
It's only when I lose myself with someone else
That I find myself
I find myself

    But he says

It’s only when I lose myself in someone else Then I find myself I find myself

Something beautiful is happening inside for me Something sensual, it's full of fire and mystery I feel hypnotized, I feel paralized I have found heaven

I feel this song describes what being in love, madly in love, is. It might seem wrong, but it isn't. There might be thousand reasons why it seems you should not be together, but they are not important, because in your heart you feel it's the right thing.

It’s only when I lose myself in someone else Then I find myself

Love is about taking risks, about losing control and giving yourself to another person. You can't always try to be in control of everything. There's a happiness in feeling this hypnotizing, overwhelming feeling of love. :)

Great song and a great video as well...if anyone ever saw it, it was based on a series of paintings where people who died in car crashes come back to life. Freaky, to say the least, but fits their gloominess.

This should have been placed on "Ultra", but somehow ended up as a separate single...

As for a meaing - it seems to be about love, but might have a double meaning:

I can feel the emptiness inside me fade & disappear There's a feeling of content that now you are here

Maybe its about love akin to drug - you know, the chemistry and all that stuff. When its gone, you start to feel withdrawal symptoms, so Dave is obviously painting good parallels to drug use.

    My Interpretation

Has anyone else considered this to be a song about infedelity?

"It’s only when I lose myself in someone else Then I find myself I find myself"

When we meet someone new, we feel that they really understand us. Loosing yourself in somone to discover how they see you allows you to see "find" yourself.

"Something beautiful is happening inside for me Something sensual, it's full of fire and mystery I feel hypnotized, I feel paralized I have found heaven"

This is the butterflies, the excitment of someone new. It's sensual, new, etc. It's addicting, paralizing.

"There’s a thousand reasons Why I shouldn't spent my time with you For every reason not to be here I can think of two Keep me hanging on Feeling nothing’s wrong Inside your heaven"

You shouldn't be there, your cheating, but you can't draw yourself away from that perfect place.

"I can feel the emptiness inside me fade & disappear There's a feeling of content that now you are here I feel satisfied I belong inside Your velvet heaven"

The feeling you had with your partner perhaps what led you to cheat. There is a sense of belonging with this new person.

"Did I need to sell my soul For pleasure like this Did I have to lose control To treasure your kiss Did I need to place my heart In the palm of your hand Before I could even start To understand"

Selling your soul is the risk of being unfaithful. Loosing control, giving your heart to feel loved again.

It's a song about longing for someone, even when you know that loving them might not be right. To me it's one of the most sensual songs I've heard.

Yeah this has a lot of meaning for me too....loving someone who is out of bounds is a nightmare...been there and done that.

Gosh, I so agree with Nightandday - that feeling of being in love is what's the issue here. When you are prepared to give youyr life for that love - even knowing that you may only experience this for a week, a month, a year! "Are you prepared to die for love"? That is what the attraction to the Velvet Heaven is.

It's actually a gift from God and we are very fortunate to experience, those who do. And those who do will always have a language barrier with those who have not.

It's all about feeling people, even feeling crap is 1000 times better than feeling nothing.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
