"Angel" as written by and Tanya Donelly....
Give it to me, please
I said to god.
It's only fair.
Instead, he sent three angels
To move the river,
So now it flows by my house,
So now it goes by my house.
I'd still rather have the man.
I've had bad dreams,
So bad I threw my pillow away.
Move the river,
So now it flows by my house,
So now it goes by my house.
I'd still rather have the man.

General CommentI love the line "bad dreams / so bad I threw my pillow away"!

This has been one of my favorite songs for years. Heart-breakingly sad but it's impossible to pin it down -- images from a dream.

I thought the words were "I'd still rather have them here."

General CommentTanya has several songs about things she'd dreamed (ie. moonbeam monkey was one I;m sure of)

General CommentFunny, to this day I'd swear the lyric is:
"I'd still rather have a name."

In my mind the whole song is kind of a lament to the futility of human desire before the divine will (or, if you like, the vast uncaring nature of the universe).

The singer is begging for this one seemingly simple thing (a name?).
God dispatches powerful cosmic forces to literally reshape the geography instead.
The world is dramatically altered, but the singer isn't complaining that the alteration was bad, just that it wasn't the little thing they wanted.

As a theist, this isn't an unfamiliar feeling: "But this is the thing I wanted! Why did you go to so much trouble to give me this unrelated thing instead?"

General CommentHuh. I always heard the opening lyric as "Bring him to me..."
Which makes "I'd still rather have the man" make more sense.

Regardless, Tanya's use of repetition in this one really makes me think of some old Sumerian poems I've read.
