Coax Me Lyrics

It all seemed to happen so fast
Will you ever believe the way he passed away?
I saw his widow speak on her fortune
She was feeling pretty apathetic

Coax me, cajole me
Coax me, cajole me

If I drink concentrated O.J.
Can I think consolidated's O.K.?
It's not the band I hate it's their fans,
3 cans of water perverts me

Coax me, cajole me
Coax me, cajole me
Coax me, cajole me

And after he died
By rights she'd have cried
I gave mine away
I gave mine away

I saw a widow's speak on her forehead
It was full of lines and sinkers

Coax me, cajole me
Coax me, cajole me
Coax me, cajole me

i'm writing an analysis on this piece for a music assignment, and this thought just occoured to me while i aimlessly rambled. i'm just going to copy and paste the exerpt:

Murphy is more known as the "witty" member of Sloan, writing interesting and thoughtful songs with subjective lyrics. Coax Me is no exception to this. At this time, Sloan was trapped in a power struggle with their label, Geffen Records (which is the same label as Nirvana was on). While Sloan were leaning toward further developing their now signature indie pop sound, Geffen were insistent on the band developing their grunge sound. The sound Geffen wanted was more in line with Nirvana, and the lyrics may subtly hint displeasure with this. Critisizing Nirvana’s fans (It's not the band I hate it's their fans, second verse) may have been Murphy’s silent form of protest.

what do you guys think of this? an interesting double standard?

Interesting thoughts lookche. Thanks for sharing them. I suspect there are several things going on in the mood of the song but feel that it is largely on Cobain and Love. The second verse does reference the band Consolidated that was semi-big in alt music in early 90s. They were radical lefty vegetarians and of course their fans could be overly strident. I think the last verse should say I saw his widow's peak on her forehead.

could be. It seems that it's a song about a famous couple. Any how this song is awesome!!

The second verse actually references the band Consolidated. I initially thought this song was about John Lennon and Yoko Ono, but it's entirely possible it's about Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love.

I do think the second verse diverges from the main topic that is most likely about Kurt and Courtney. Some orange juices, especially ones that are not 100% freshly squeezed orange juice, use vitamin D3 as a fortification. D2 comes from Plants, while D3 comes from animals. So Chris is musing most likely sarcastically, about whether he can still be a fan of the band, if he is not a true vegan / vegetarian.
