The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
I'd start off with the third verse which describes the situation we find us in. The watchtower with the women and the servants is obviously a home of someone powerful and rich. "Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl" Outside is a dangerous jungle. The two riders are the thief and the joker.
While riding towards the tower the joker and the thief have a conversation.
The joker feels that the rich "businessmen" are stealing from him: "None of them along the line know what any of it is worth". Ironically he's telling that to the thief whose job is to steal. The joker probably doesn't know that his friend is a thief.
"There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke" replies the thief to the joker.
So actually they are complaining about each other and they should be mad at each other. But they have teamed up to bring down the rich and powerful guy who has it all.
Are they using him as a scapegoat for their status in the society?
If they defeat the rich guy the thief is going to steal his stuff or even take his place (watchtower). And the joker is probably there for the princess.

@rtsense I disagree with you, because in my perspective I think that the Joker is Jesus and the theif is one of the theives that were at his crucification. I think its Jesus because the line says "Businessmen, they drink my wine" which can be his blood or the wine he creates, and the other line is "plowmen dig my earth" which is what his father, God, gave him. I think the so g takes place while he is getting crucified, and he's conversating with one of the thiefs. But you have a very interesting theory.
