The Dark Is Rising Lyrics
I dreamed of you in my arms
But dreams are always wrong
I never dreamed I'd hurt you
I never dreamed I'd lose you
In my dreams, I'm always strong
And all my bridges burnt
Plumes of smoke and high clouds
But dreams don't last for long
When the stars are in position
All will be revealed
But I know that until then
Unless the stars surrender
All will be concealed
And all my fences torn
And I can hear someone
Somewhere in this song
And the two of us were talking
Of all lives mysteries
But words that flow between friends
Winding streams, without end
I wanted you to see
When you find yourself alone
And now the dark is rising
And a brand new moon is born
I never dreamed I'd lose you
In my dreams, I'm always strong.

this isn't music, this is a work of art. it's amazing.

this song is perfect...if you dream about someone you can relate to it.

Reminds me of a storybook tale, only the ending is not the perfect happiness that was envisioned. Amidst the dreams of grandeur - "big crowds, plooms of smoke and high clouds" - and dreams of simplicity - "I dreamed that I was walking, and the two of us were talking" - the real life vision is lost. There is a sense of both loneliness and optimism in the song which I completely relate to. Reminds me of the "perfect" girl I was with that I slowly let slip away because I wanted to be "perfect" with her, instead of being me, with all my weaknesses as well as strengths. And I never dreamed I'd lose her either, but am left wondering about her still. This song is amazing.

Almost a year later, and this CD is still regulary played at home, in the car, in my discman on the bus. Its one of those songs that is great for anywhere.. nice for drifting off... remembering that certain someone... still makes me sad.. WHY do i keep listening to it? LOL

This song has a sort of feeling not unlike meeting that one true love who dumped you later in the afterlife and just sort of walking along a creek talking about what happened in your lives after you parted ways.

sigh makes me think about the person I loved who went to university far away. I never really gave up on those dreams and I think this captures that feelings that one day "when the stars are in position all will be revealed"

this song is overpowering. i love how the music flares up at intervals into this glorious overblown instrumental kind of sound, and then it goes back to the wistful, low-key vocals... the lyrics are sad and lovely, too.

The fragility of life and love are explored in this song. The idea of destiny and predestination offers hope to us as human beings. No one knows what life has in store for us and we have to accept that sometimes we have to eat shit in life but the promise of life’s mysteries and the ability to connect with human beings makes the journey worthwhile. That’s my interpretation… one of the most uplifting songs I’ve ever heard. Really strikes a chord. A true piece of art.

Susan Cooper wrote a young adult fantasy series called "The Dark is Rising" - for a long time, I thought the series and this song sharing a title was just a coincidence, but looking at the lyrics, I think Mercury Rev did take inspiration from the eponymous second book in the series. Some of the images are reminiscent of the book, particularly the farm, the creek rising, the stars, the snow falling, "this song", winding streams. All of these play a major role in the book, which features the power of nature as a theme. The phrase "The Dark is Rising" is an unusual title, both for a song and for a book series, so I think there's probably a connection.
But there's no love story in the book. If Mercury Rev was thinking of a particular relationship in the books and not just using the images, I would say it's about Will, the hero, and his alienation from his large and loving family as he learns of his secret quest and destiny. But I think it's more likely that Mercury Rev used a very beautiful book to write a very beautiful song about a very beautiful love story.

well said brighteyes - i can totally relate to that
