The lights are off again
She took me by surprise
She's so sensitive
This shit just happens sometimes
She's my everything
She's my best friend and more
We don't do anything
We didn't do the day
Before you go
You ought to know
That I didn't mean to hurt you, I just wanted you to know

Black tears are falling down her face
And I am wrong
Black tears are falling and she won't say what I've done
She's sitting here beside me, then she is gone
Black tears are falling, falling

Remember long ago
Together laughing, loving
Oh so long ago
When we were buying something
Life was simple then
But she's not happy now, and I
Don't feel anything
Her lips are moving
I am mesmerized
By tiny lies
I'm watching as the shapes are drawing slowly from her eyes

Black tears are falling down her face
And I am wrong
Black tears are falling and she won't say what I've done
She's sitting here beside me, then she is gone
Black tears are falling, falling
Black tears are falling, falling

Losing Lisa
Losing Lisa
Losing Lisa
And there's nothing I can do

Black tears are falling, falling (ooh ooh) [Repeats]

    My Opinion

This song is about two people becoming disillusioned by a long term relationship. It's written from the perspective of a "typical" male (read: oblivious) observing the response of a "typical" female (read: over sensitive) during this time.

She is getting to the end of her tether with all the things he does that make her angry eg. things that may appear to be inconsiderate or selfish and her "black tears" are tears of anger and frustration that nothing's changing.

She has got beyond explaining why she's pissed off (She won't say what I've done) However, a lot of the conclusions she has come to are a result of how she interprets his actions as opposed to how he means them. so while she assumes he's well aware, he genuinely doesn't understand what he's done wrong, he just knows that is her default attitude (black tears are falling down her face and I am wrong) and despite them still bothering to spend monotonous time around each other (we don't do anything we didn't do the day before) she seems to have checked out of the relationship (She's sitting here beside me and she is gone) thus, he can see he's losing her but doesn't have a clue how to prevent it or, indeed, whether he even wants to any more.

They had a great relationship in the start, built on friendship and mutual understanding (remember long ago, together laughing loving) but also characterised by youth and naivety, forged before they grew up together and became jaded by all of life's necessary sacrifices. Back when they both believed in hope and promises (oh so long ago, when we were buying something). He still remembers all that and does, on some level, still consider her to be the same person she was (she's my everything, she's my best friend and more), which refers to his memory of them at their best and what there relationship was intended to be but he's heard the same things from her so many times that they've become meaningless, he's zoned out and, in this particular case, has entertained himself by watching the movements of her angry complaints causing lines to appear on her face. Lines from ageing that never used to be there (her lips are moving, I am mesmerized by tiny lines) This is about a couple who are RIGHT on the brink of their relationship breaking down through lack of communication. Neither of them knows how to fix it because they're not listening to each other. They never evolved from the initial spark in to learning to understand each other but the memory of what they used to be has driven them to drag it out regardless, sticking with their respective bad habits to the point of no return. It's an extremely common scenario that a lot of people can identify with. Neither party is at fault, but it just doesn't work.

The line, "She's sitting here beside me, then she is gone," that's powerful stuff.

Awesome song. I feel like this album is so much more serious than his work from Ben Folds Five.

Wow. For some reason, I always thought that this song was about the speaker losing his loved one (Lisa), because he worked so much. Because of his job or whatever, his relationship with Lisa is failing.

Didnt know it was more general.

it would be ironic if it was about suicide...the beat is so uppity and happy-like and the meaning is so deep and uuh..meaningful. do you suppose it was supposed to be that way? sometimes people cover their emotions up no matter how dark they are with an optimistic facade, do you think this is just a song of pure happiness shielding angsty feelings?

anna118k- no, it's not because of his "job or whatever", it's about his girlfriend or wife killing herself. and it is not general, it is specifically about one thing. second, darren sings in underground, not ben, durrr.... and third, have you not heard The Unauthorized Biography...? how can you say that ben folds cd is more serious than that??

and to your name here i do believe that the meaning was supposed to be meaningful... i think its also an angsty song showing angsty feelings...

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
