i could take this song two ways: either it's in reference to a girl who's bothered by some 'ghost' of the past, and this guy wants to love her, but since 'love is only heaven away', which is pretty dang far away, he sees it as impossible to have his love reciprocated....

OR...

it's about another guy with a ghost of a past lover haunting him, either because she's died or because they've broken up.

i think LittleGreen was pretty accurate with both ideas. he is def speaking globally about the idea of lost love that doesnt ever fade away. time can pass, but these memories and this love will not fade away. its a beautiful song and i love the guitar! i am still confused with the lines "the man in my shoes runs the light all the papers lie tonight but falling over you is the news of the day " any one want to help?

i think this basically means that he feels like he doesn't belong in his shoes....maybe that that he is numb from pain and feels like he is watching himself from afar...the man in his shoes runs the light (the running the light part is confusing though) but that he doesnt feel like he is really there in heart, just in body. Also I took the part about all the papers lie tonight just as being that newspapers always lie, but in his life the only news is that he is mourning the loss of his past lover. A great song.

I like the idea of it being about mourning over a lost love but I think it might also be about someone, maybe a lover, who has changed from when they first knew each other. In this sense I think the 'ghost in you' is the person how they used to be and everytime he looks at her he sees who she used to be and so 'she don't fade away.' I'm not sure how the rest of the song relates to this, it might or it might not, but that was what I thought when I first heard this song. But I like and readily accept all the other interpretations people have made.

Hmm... I have a new take on this song. At first I always thought it was just someone who lost a love, but now I think there is more to it. I think the singer got his heart broke by this girl that said she loved him and all that, but never truly did. Now this girl is doing the same thing to another guy. So the singer is telling this other guy not to get involved. The two were once in the same situation, hence 'man in my shoes.' He runs the light, he is happy, walking on air and he's like a newspaper, he is telling the world that she loves him. Its the news of the day because tomorrow it will be different.

The next stanza... well pretty much he says he is in the mood to talk to the guy. He's trying to talk him out of loving this girl because she won't love him back. "Love... you can't give it away." They are racing against time, he's falling in love and soon it will be too late before the guy gets hurt. The singer's 'engines die' because the guy is arguing with him and not listening. So the singer tells the guy that she will get inside of him and like a ghost she will haunt him forever.

Next stanza the guy is still arguing, he thinks that he is superman and that he will be different. That the girl will really love him.

The love is all of heaven away just means that the guy is dreaming. Real love with her is further than he'll get in a lifetime.

its like that the past love was a real long time ago, and is dead, and in heaven... but even after all this time, its still falling down on him. wether it be angels, rain or stars (anything from the sky/heavens)

This is a song that can be interpreted many ways it seems. When I first heard it, I thought it was a love song. Admittedly, I did not know all the lyrics, and still question some of them now.

I love "furrealgirl"'s interpretation too (this song is listed twice on this site), but it seems from my recent experience, this song means this...

Angels fall like rain = Love from her was "heaven", now it's gone, so angels fall... love is all of heaven away = heaven was love, and so now love seems so far away...

inside you the time moves and she don't fade = we find that he is thinking of the past... time has passed (moved on), but her memory is still there the ghost in you she don't fade = once again, the memories don't fade

the race is on i'm on your side = back then he was competing for her...just like the first line of "runs a light"...competition for her...racing for her... hearing you my engines die = he drops everything whenever he hears from her i'm in a mood for you = he loves her or...

(for/or..i think "or") running away = ...or wants to run away from the pain...notice how he says this a little sadly...like he feels sad that a love can hurt so much when it's not returned, so you want to run away....

I believe he says "or running away" because in the previous line he says "for"...as in "I'm in a mood for you"...and clearly the "f" is enunciated there...but there's barely a hint of an "f" sound in the following "or running away" verse...

stars come down in you = since there is no "heaven", even the stars fall, but she still looked heavenly love you can't give it away = but she still won't give him love

don't you go it makes no sense = pleading : don't leave me

when all your "talk of supermen" just take away the time = talking about guys better him just takes away time from me trying to win you back OR when all your "talking supermen" just take away the time = other so called "better" guys competing for her takes away time from him trying to win her back

and get in the way = notice how he says this...like he's been pleading for her to come back, but then says this line like he just now realizes at that moment that he has no hope no matter what he says...

ain't it just like rain = so he cries, tears cuz he realizes there is no hope love is only heaven away = love for her was heaven, now it's not there and so love is far away....

So this is a song of a guy reminiscing of a failed love, and the spirit of what he loved in her will not go away....
