St. Robinson In His Cadillac Dream Lyrics
Arthur Robinson closes the glass and replies:
"I dream of ballerinas and I don't know why
but I see Cadillacs sailing
I was born on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay
But Maryland and Virginia have faded away
And I keep thinking tomorrow is coming today
So I am endlessly waiting
And the comet is coming between
Me and the girl who could make it all clean."
Out there in the shadow of the modern machine
Walks St. Robinson in his Cadillac dream.
Carrie's down in her basement all toe shoes and twinned
With the girl in the mirror who spins when she spins
From where you think you'll end up to the state that you're in
Your reflection approaches and then recedes again
And the comet is coming between
Me and the girl who could make it all clean
Out there in the shadow of the modern machine
Walks St. Robinson in his Cadillac dream:
"I have dreamed of a black car that shimmers and drives
Down the length of the evening to the carnival side
In a house where regret is a carousel ride
We are spinning and spinning and spinning and now...
There's a hole in the ceiling down through which I fell
There's a girl in a basement coming out of her shell
And there are people who will say that they knew me so well
I may not go to heaven
I hope you go to hell!
Yeah, but the comet is coming between
Me and the girl who could make it all clean."
Out there in the shadow of the modern machine
Walks St. Robinson in his Cadillac dream.

I think its about suicide. People ride to funerals in Black Cadillacs, so his 'Cadillac Dream' is a dream about his funeral. In the first verse he's contemplating suicide. "the girl who could make it all clean" is a girl the guy is in love with who would be living for. Except they don't hook up. The last verse is the protagonist killing himself, and possibly the girl deciding she likes him just a little bit too late.
"And there are people who will say that they knew me so well... " Is people speaking at his funeral
well, this is how I relate to the song.
Wow dude I never even thought of this song in such a way, glad i read that definitely a cool view of the song.

"i may not go to heaven, i hope you go to hell" i love that part!

i like the end where he says "some people are never quite what they seem"-it ties into "There's a hole in the ceiling down through which I fell There's a girl in a basement coming out of her shell And there are people who will say that they knew me so well... I may not go to heaven I hope you go to hell" it reminds me of how we are the only people who truely know ourselves

it reminds me of rain king in the way that it says "im a loner, and a dreamer"... like many other of CC songs

i love this song so much i think its about facing up to the fact that you can't be judgemental about people because just like you only know yourself truly, they are the only ones who know who they are, we can make judgements but they will all be on false grounds. I love the line 'theres a girl in a basement coming out of her shell'

It reminds me of a toy shop.

Sometimes I think it was just written to sound nice--and for the imagery of Cadillacs and ballerinas. But I think it could also be about someone whose expectations for himself and for the world are too high, and are never met. "I keep thinking tomorrow is coming today, so I am endlessly waiting." He's waiting for something that's never going to come on time. And "from where you think you'll end up to the state that you're in, your reflection approaches and then recedes again" I think refers to his not being where he wants to be in life.

I believe it's turning into something totally new. "Your reflection approaches and then recedes again." I also think it's against juding people, especially the judgement of Adam by his fans. "And there are people who will say taht they knew me so well. I may not go to heaven. I hope you go to hell." And finally, about having dreams that you know are crazy deep down, but you can;t let them go. And finally it contemplates leaving his life of fame behind, and finding peace.

as adam says.... "Thats the one song we had written before we started the album, its the only one, although it was drasticly diffrent before. It's of a different depth lyricly cause its really about someone, It's sort of me taking the piss out of myself in a way. It's about a guy with big dreams, which is you know, been what I've always been. But it's about a guy whos so obsessed with his big dreams and like everything he wants out of life, but he cant relate to life on simplier terms, all he can think of is in terms of his big dreams, and it makes it so he can't deal with day to day communication with people, specificly this one person. It's a song about how at some point this guy is looking back at him life and hes seeing a point where two peoples lives spun together and then for what ever reason they spun apart.."

"In a house where regret is a carousel ride We are spinning and spinning and spinning and now..."
That line is absolutely poetic. I, myself, see it as a family who's messed up, and do things that they wish they hadn't done, because they affected their loved ones by doing it.
At least, that's what I think of, seeing as I can relate.
