The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Shrouded in proof, You're the mystery
You're the truth that lives within the world we see
You're the hand that holds destiny
And I can't pretend I don't know
And I can't leave it alone (yeah, yeah)
You're the best kept secret in my generation
The best kept secret of all time
You're the best kept secret in my generation
And I found you out
You're the hope over the centuries
You're the cosmic force that rules the galaxies
You're the evidence that demands our belief
And I can't live for myself
I can't keep this all to myself (yeah, yeah)
You're the best kept secret in my generation
The best kept secret of all time
You're the best kept secret in my generation
And I found you out
Let it out
Let it out
Let it out
Let it out, yeah!
And I can't pretend I don't know
And I can't leave it alone (yeah, yeah)
You're the best kept secret in my generation
The best kept secret of all time
You're the best kept secret in my generation
And I found you out
You're the truth that lives within the world we see
You're the hand that holds destiny
And I can't pretend I don't know
And I can't leave it alone (yeah, yeah)
You're the best kept secret in my generation
The best kept secret of all time

You're the hope over the centuries
You're the cosmic force that rules the galaxies
You're the evidence that demands our belief
And I can't live for myself
I can't keep this all to myself (yeah, yeah)
You're the best kept secret in my generation
The best kept secret of all time
You're the best kept secret in my generation
And I found you out
Let it out
Let it out
Let it out
Let it out, yeah!
And I can't pretend I don't know
And I can't leave it alone (yeah, yeah)
You're the best kept secret in my generation
The best kept secret of all time
You're the best kept secret in my generation
And I found you out

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
Plastic Bag

Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
I think song alludes to the one story in the Bible where Jesus gives sight to the blind man and despite telling the blind man to tell no one of the miracle, the blind man can't help but do so.
The singer has "discovered" God and can't help but tell others.
Ah, one of my "theme songs"... I have found Him out. This song totally rocks my world.
This song Rocks!!!!!!
Yeah, this song rocks, but is this song refering to God as "the best kept secret of all time, You're the best kept secret in my generation"? For one thing, God is definetely not a secret!!!
It could just be how discovering God is a way to experience bigger and better things...

I see the word "secret" more as "hidden", instead of something that people don't want to tell you about..

Just my opinion, really.
I know in there area i live in to other people around my age god is a secret as they do not go to church and they have not had backgrounds which have lead them to know god.

I also know the feeling of coming to know god in your late teens and this song covers those feeling very well
This song is cool.Kiwidd, though,In a way He is isn't he?I mean for one, people are afraid to tell other people they believe in God.4 2,most people don't know about God's love, they may have heard of him,but they really don't know about him or seen his miracles or know that he is all you need to survive spiritually, mentally, and some times physically. They don't know he is great. So I think, like the song says'Let it out'we,the people who do know him should tell people, help them know him, love him,&be w/him 4 eternity by showing them what we have seen. This song rocks, and gets a good point acrossed.
i see kiwidd's point but when you think about the fact that in the 10/40 window there are millions who have never heard about God you realize he really is a secret to many people but the part about "i found you out" isn't true at all, we don't find God, God's always there it's just a matter of us accepting his free gift.
I dont think the it means that john found god himself. I think it means that John found gods love for himself, even after all teh crap and hard times hes been through. Just like alotta people turn to drugs or alchol or sex to try to help themselves John turned to god.
I think this song is more about witnessing than anything else. I don't think John really means that literally, I think he is trying to say that God is pretty much absent in the media and we all know how much media is a part of our everyday lives. I also think he is trying to say that we CHRISTians really need to get of our butts and really get out there and witness more to our friends and what have you. ~Serenity Always~
THis is the very first Skillet song I ever heard, years ago. My sister taped the music video off of some late night tv show that is no longer on ): and I watched it over and over and over! I love the fact that they have 2 female band members!
Hey.....I get to go to a Skillet concert this week, and I heard that they are WAY good, and I just wanted to know what ya'll think.......
I think the word "best" carries two meanings here. First, that God is a wonderful secret, something good that we have. Second, that this generation has made no effort to change the fact that to some, God is still a secret.
