He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
It's the same thing as Nirvana's "In Bloom" He's basically talking about all the jocks & everyday people who became hanger on's in the underground music scene after Grunge started blowing up.

so i am not sure if this is the real meaning or not but this is what me and my guitarist got out of the song : it's about people how make you do work and don't give you money well the bare minimum that is and thinks you are there friend and try to be a hipster but there just a loser
I love the lyric "You're just a walking billboard for all the latest brands." Too many dumbass kids walk around acting as billboards for Abercrombie & Fitch, Nike, and other brands. They do this unknowingly because these are the "cool" brands, but all they are is a walking billboard. We should have more respect for ourselves than to do that.
