"November" as written by and Tom Waits....
No shadow
No stars
No moon
No care
It only believes
In a pile of dead leaves
And a moon
That's the color of bone

No prayers for November
To linger longer
Stick your spoon in the wall
We'll slaughter them all

November has tied me
To an old dead tree
Get word to April
To rescue me
November's cold chain

Made of wet boots and rain
And shiny black ravens
On chimney smoke lanes
November seems odd
You're my firing squad

With my hair slicked back
With carrion shellac
With the blood from a pheasant
And the bone from a hare

Tied to the branches
Of a roebuck stag
Left to wave in the timber
Like a buck shot flag

Go away you rainsnout
Go away, blow your brains out

General CommentWhat's wrong with November? I love this song, very atmospheric & dramatic, but for my money November can linger as long as it likes.

General CommentHe's right. November sucks, and all bad things happen then.

My InterpretationPart of the genius of Tom Waits is his ability to evoke images so intensely with such seeming ease. This song is a perfect example. I feel if your from the south or a warm climate, this song may not be felt so strong as it were if you've experienced November in the north where the first word that comes to mind is not Thanksgiving but COLD! Cold is the essence. Look at the stark desperation and sadness in each line. Its almost entirely without hope. With several references to death or entrapment and only one use of the word cold, to me he clearly evokes a kind of outdoor despair that's felt by anyone, worker, hunter, survivalist that has endured more of the cold than is tolerable. This song is one of my favorite of Toms, it never fails to warm my heart, which i need in Novembers cold chain, made of wet boots and rain.

General CommentI love the vivid imagery in the lyrics of this song, I always feel a sense of despair when November comes around. The words are so colorfully descriptive that they inspired me to paint a picture of the bleakness of a London park in November.
