I've been run down and I've been lied to.
And I don't know why, I let that mean woman make me a fool.
She took all my money, wrecks my new car.
Now she's with one of my good time buddies,
They're drinkin' in some cross-town bar.

Sometimes I feel, sometimes I feel,
Like I've been tied to the whippin' post.
Tied to the whippin' post, tied to the whippin' post.
Good Lord, I feel like I'm dyin'

My friends tell me, that I've been such a fool.
But I had to stand by and take it baby, all for lovin' you.
Drown myself in sorrow as I look at what you've done.
But nothing seemed to change, the bad times stayed the same,
And I can't run.

Sometimes I feel, sometimes I feel,
Like I've been tied to the whippin' post.
Tied to the whippin' post, tied to the whippin' post.
Good Lord, I feel like I'm dyin'.

Sometimes I feel, sometimes I feel,
Like I've been tied to the whippin' post.
Tied to the whippin' post, tied to the whippin' post.
Good Lord, I feel like I'm dyin'

this man has just been horribly hurt by a woman. besides being hurt, he was taken advantage of and made to feel like he was worthless and being beaten on. usually in society we see things happen the other way around. but this man sings his heart out telling his tales of woe. hah, this is one of my dad's favorite songs. i hear it all the time.

I read in the encyclopedia of rock that this song is "Gregg's acute analysis of his relationship with Duane, who responds with lashings of guitar" Killer, killer tune..

The song was written in the middle of the night on an ironing board using burnt matches. He was 20 years old when the recording was made but sings with the emotion and experience of someone much older.

Lyrically speaking, this song isn't anything special - been done too many times before in that department. But good sweet lord on a saltine cracker, if this isn't one of the best songs I've ever had the absolute pleasure of hearing in my life! Nothing I've heard since can really compare.

Shudder to Think
This song is timeless, and nearly 20 years after its creation, still possesses the mystique it did the first time i heard it ~1994. To me, at first blush, all those years ago, it had some kind of homo-erotic allure. The line "so that the others may do" tells of something which must be done for others to follow suit. It felt like like some kind of roxy-glam-pop invitation to sexual liberation. Upon further introspection I think the song may not have an intrinsic meaning, but simply represents a sort of "holding open the door" for people who otherwise might be affronted by this song/band's unusual style. I know, as a sort of armchair rock-historian, that there have been few bands so daring and so true to the sound that wanted to emerge from within, whether the creator wanted it or not. This band handled it with elegance and grace seldom, if ever, seen.
