The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Oh yeah
I hear you talking
When I'm on the street
Your mouth don't move
But I can hear you speak
What's the matter with the boy?
He don't come around no more
Is he checking out for sure?
Is he gonna close the door on me?
I'm always hearing voices
On the street
I want to shout
But I can't hardly speak
I was making love last night
To a dancer friend of mine
I can't seem to stay in step
Come every time that she pirouettes over me
And I only get my rocks off
While I'm dreaming
I only get my rocks off
While I'm sleeping
I'm zipping through the days
At lightning speed
Plug in, flush out
And fire the fuckin' feed
Heading for the overload
Splattered on the dirty road
Kick me like you've kicked before
I can't even feel the pain no more
But I only get my rocks off
While I'm dreaming
I only get my rocks off
While I'm sleeping
Feel so hypnotized, can't describe the scene
It's all mesmerized, all that inside me
The sunshine bores the daylights out of me
Chasing shadows, moonlight mystery
Heading for the overload
Splattered on the dirty road
Kick me like you've kicked before
I can't even feel the pain no more
And I only get my rocks off
While I'm dreaming
I only get my rocks off
While I'm sleeping
And I only get my rocks off
While I'm dreaming
And I only get my rocks off
While I'm sleeping
Only get them off
Only get them off
Get them off
Only get them off, get them off
Only get them off
I hear you talking
When I'm on the street
Your mouth don't move
But I can hear you speak
What's the matter with the boy?
He don't come around no more
Is he checking out for sure?
Is he gonna close the door on me?
I'm always hearing voices
On the street

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
Plastic Bag

Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
To me this song is at once celebratory and miserable & jaded.
The singer of the song has led a life of such excess that things that were once great fun now just don't do anything for him. In fact he's so jaded that even things that used to cause him pain don't make him feel anything anymore.
His only escape, his only way of getting any kind of 'satisfaction' is to escape into his dreams, into sleep.
God, what a fucking horrible thing to have happen to you. And yet, somehow the song, the music, seems so celebratory, maybe ironically so. I dunno, it's a really great song though, pretty mature thinking.
Hot damn, those Horns kick ass!
How do they go... BA BA ba-da! BA BA ba-da! BA BA ba=daba da BAaaaaaaaaaaaaaDAAAAAAAaaah!
this ain't about smack, maybe in a line or two, but not in its whole meaning. the line
"plug in, flash out, and fire the fucking feed"
is about music playing, music trance, the engagement of your soul with your instruments. the song is not about gay experiencies, is about the fast and tyring life of mick and keith
"i'm zipping through the days at lighting speed"
line prooves it, and if you add the line that comes afterwards, even more.
don't you have anything more important to do than making fun of two of the greatest musicians alive?
But I only get my rocks off while I\'m dreaming, I only get my rocks off while I\'m sleeping. i think this song has a rather unique meaning :) ahh poor mick and his lack of viagra/cialis/other remember it is not safe to have erections for 4 or more hours and that if this occurs you need immediate medical attention haha......hmm its only the 4 of us.....guess not many baby boomers are into this site
fuck yeah! again i love those horns
I agree---mature thinking on your part. I think you're right but I doubt Jagger put that much thought into it.
Why would you possibly think Jagger didn't put much thought into it?
Ah now that was funny! What's even funnier is just tonight I heard on the news how viagra and cialis and that other hard-on pill are causing blindness!
I can't say I know what this means, but I don't really think it was about gay sex experiences, that has never crossed my mind. I don't see the reference, if there is one, either.
few errors in lyrics:
