Guns (Are for Pussies) Lyrics

Here comes the thunder down under
we're natural wonders
night falls when we leave all you feel is the hunger
sunrises of people all shapes and sizes
dig on the decade and realize it's funky
no matter this rude boy stll got that swagger
my ears have heard all these crews but we're badder
interracial, special, positive beings
I am I be a cool awakwening
it's getting hectic the metrics the body electric
everybody in worn out blue jeans or tacky dresses
this is the city we've reached we've come to
go unrecognized on the corner or make moves
all the lights are red all the poets are dead
a familiar nightmare appears in my head
times are a changin' myself I'm rearrangin'
dream eight-thousand-five-twelve all blazin'

Born to act out, paranoid with a gat
born to act out, think you know where it's at
born to act out, but you're lookin' like a sissie
born to act out, guns are for pussies
born to act out, paranoid with a gat
born to act out, think you know where it's at
born to act out, but you're lookin' like a sissie
born to act out, guns are for pussies

I'm not from Philly but some say I'm a blunt
that's just the way I am and no I'm not going to front
and yes I took a trip to find out about the ways of big citys
seedy bars and drugs that make you feel s---ty
pretty older women in skirts, conversation frisky
stinking cigarettes and plenty of bourbon whisky
sad classical music on the jukebox of doom
Hollywood Blvd. barfly frolic room
tomb of lost souls some beyond salvage
some just having fun opening the steam valvage
I was one becoming the other hellbent to discover
had to pull up the reigns or else smother
take it brother all the way and then you're scared
don't want to be unprepared
you're getting paranoid, and then guns are shared
you guys think you're hard
but you're in fear of getting harmed
I fear no manand I am unarmed

Born to act out, paranoid with a gat
born to act out, think you know where it's at
born to act out, but you're lookin' like a sissie
born to act out, guns are for pussies
born to act out, paranoid with a gat
born to act out, think you know where it's at
born to act out, but you're lookin' like a sissie
born to act out, guns are for pussies
come on

This is one of 311's songs that I don't really agree with. "I fear no man and I am unarmed"? Tell me that when some thug wants to rob you at gun point.

Here's a good quote for you guys...

"If you carry a gun, people will call you paranoid. That's ridiculous... If I have a gun, what in the hell do I have to be paranoid for?"

It´s quite akward finding myself in the need to explain something like this to someone, but....anyway, here I go:

when you're carrying a gun, you may realize that maybe you are not the only one person carrying a gun around. Somebody' s gotta have a gun too, pal. So, considering a hipotetical situation where you and (an armed)"somebody" find yourselves in a problem(I mean a big problem, like arguing, swearing, threats and stuff...u can be in a Club, at the Mall, at the traffic...it happens all the time) and this somebody realizes that you are armed too....

Not Valid

@seawolfxix I just read this comment that was posted 5 years ago. Paranoid with a gat. Yes I agree. You have more to worry about carrying a loaded gun around than otherwise. Guns are always a high stakes game to play.

Guy's shut up. I hate it when someone's favorite band has an ideal view and you guys all have to gather around it.

I personally think this song is mocking gangsta rappers thinking they're tough because they're "natural born killaz." Since 311 have a rap metal influence, I guess they felt it was appropriate not to be stereotyped.

BrazilianFan: You're dumb. You base that opinion on emotion, but not fact or data. Over five million people in the country legally carry firearms everday. Most states don't even require a permit for some form of carry (openly on your hip or concealed under your clothes. Varies by state).

Guns are used about 2.5 millions times a year for self-defense according to the FBI and Department of Justice. Less than 10,000 people a year are murdered with guns. Less than 300 people out of the 4 million or more with concealed carry permits have been charged with a crime related to guns in the last five years.

Simply put, most gun owners know that when they're carrying they can't get mad in traffic or argue with people because they can't escalate a situation.

Owning and carrying a gun has made me a better and more calm person. I just walk away if someone gets mad at me. My gun is to defend human life ONLY.

I am a little perturbed by the line "born to act out"... is SA implying that gangsters, who are predominantly black, are genetically predisposed to be violent?

One should never take 311's lyrics TOO seriously, or else you're missing the point of the music.

"You guys think you're hard, but you're in fear of getting harmed"

It's about fear, paranoia and building a wall around yourself. I think in 1995, this song was more geared towards gang and street violence (I'm not implying race here to be clear), and less about self-defense via open-carry. But let's face it, they don't play it at all anymore because of how intense the gun situation has become in America. Interesting, to say the least.
