State of love and trust as I busted down the pretext
Sin still plays and preaches, but to have an empty court, uh huh
And the signs are passin', grip the wheel, can't read it
Sacrifice receiving the smell that's on my hands, hands, yeah

And I listen for the voice inside my head
Nothin', I'll do this one myself

Lay her down as priest does, should the Lord be accountin'
Will be in my honor, make it pain, painfully quick, uh huh
Promises are whispered in the age of darkness
Want to be enlightened like I want to be told the end, end, yeah

And the barrel shakes aimed a directly at my head
Oh, help me, help me from myself
And I listen from both sides of a friend
Nothin', I'll do this one myself
Myself, myself

Hey, hey
Uh
Hey, na-na-na-na, hey, that's something
Hey, na-na-na-na, hey, that's something
Hey, na-na-na-na, hey, that's something
Wanna back, back it away, yeah

And I listen, yeah, for the voice inside my head
Nothin', I'll do this one myself
Oh, ah, and the barrel waits, trigger shakes
Aimed right at my head, don't won't you help me
Help me from myself

Woo, hey, ooh
Hey, ooh, hey, ooh, hey, ooh
Woo, woo

State of love and trust, and a
State of love and trust, and a
State of love and trust, and a
State of love and yeah, yeah

damn... jsut listen to the helplessness in his voice while he is singing this song... it sounds like a man not in control of his actions.

To me this song has religious hypocrisy all over it. Definitely one of the most powerful PJ songs ever.

Seems to me that the speaker has been let down by someone ("busted down the pretext"-perhaps uncovered some disgusting truth about someone close to him). Then he is torn between his desire for revenge on one hand and his love and trust of the person on the other hand.

"Sin still plays and preaches but to have an empty court"-despite the things he is hearing he wishes to deny them and stop listening to them.

"And the signs are passing grip the wheel can't read it"-the speaker is left in a state of confusion and moving so quickly that he is unable to comprehend what is happening to him.

"Sacrifice receiving the smell that's on my hands hands yeah"-rather than being rewarded for his continued love and trust of the person, he is instead looked down upon (perhaps his "love and trust" is perceived by some as dependence upon the person).

"And I listen for the voice inside my head Nothing I'll do this one myself"-speaker calls out for the voice of God to guide him and, hearing nothing, the speaker chooses to continue on his own way, knowing of no alternative.

"Lay her down as priest does, should the lord be a counting Will be in my honor make it pain painfully clear uh huh"-the speaker wonders why God will not offer justice. The speaker has done what he feels is the right thing by not seeking revenge but seems to be receiving only punishment. The speaker feels that it has been made painfully clear that God is not on his/her side.

"Promises are whispered in the age of darkness Want to be enlightened like I want to be told the end end yeah"-The speaker refers to the promises made by God and realizes that God will reveal answers on His own schedule. Also, the speaker realizes that if he had all the answers there would be no reason to go on with life.

"Hey na na na na hey that's something (x3) Wanna back back it away yeah yeah"-The speaker begins to feel some peace about the situation when he realizes that he has done the right thing by not seeking revenge, that all should be left to God and the speaker should let it be and move on.

"And I listen yeah for the voice inside my head Nothing I'll do this one myself yeah And the barrel waits trigger shakes aimed right at my head Won't you help me help me from myself"-Even though at peace with the situation, the speaker has not received any clear guidance and therefore continues to fight an inner battle against himself.

Song closes with state of "love and trust" repeated to emphasize that the speaker's relationship with God must simply be left up to love and trust; the speaker must do the best he can to do what is right even though situations are not always clear.

I am a big PJ fan, but I don't know a lot about Eddie Vedder's personal beliefs. I do know enough, however, to realize that he likely didn't write the song intending for it to portray this, we can never really know for sure. But this is simply my interpretation.

This song is about being sexually abused or raped (most likely by a member of clergy) and contemplating suicide over it. It was an odd song to include on the "Singles" soundtrack, but the title is misleading and nobody ever could figure out what exactly was coming out of Eddie's mouth just by listening to him, so..

i think this is posible one of the most powerfull pearljam songs ever written to me this song is about someone who has cheated on their lover and doesnt know what to do about it so they listen to their concience but it doesnt tell him anything so he trys to kill himself or is attempting suicide as a way out of his long term and short term conciquences of his actions.

I seem to recall a late night discussion between a group of friends about this song and someone said that they read somewhere it was a song about rape.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
