I shut and locked the front door
No way in or out
I turned and walked the hallways
And pulled the curtains down
yeah I knelt and emptied the mouths of every plug around
But nothing's sound
nothing's sound

I'd stay where my last step left me
Ignored all my rounds
Soon I was seeing visions and cracks along the walls
They were upside down

I swallow the truth to keep from lying
I swallow my face just to keep from biting
Yeah, I swallowed my breath, I went deep,
I was diving, I was diving
Yeah, I surfaced when all of my being was enlightened

[Repeat: x4]
I'm in hiding

It's been about three days now
Since I've been above ground
i'm no longer overwhelmed and it seems so simple now
Yeah, it's funny how things change so much
It's all state of mind

I swallow the truth to keep from lying
I swallow my face just to keep from biting.
I, I am, I swallow my breath, I went deep,
I was diving, I was diving
Yeah, I surfaced when all of my being was enlightened

[Repeat x8]
Now I'm in hiding

General CommentWhile I like some of the insights here and I love the song, how did only 1 person get the drug reference?

Its about going cold turkey, kicking a habit (heroin) and seeing the world differently. re read it and "it seems so simple now" ahem jk.

yield was too good to have a best song. so well rounded and high quality.

General Comment"Now what I just said means it's great to be around a lot of people, but this next song, those times, few and far between, where you need to say - get away from me. Get the fuck away. This is called In Hiding."

General Commentthere was a canadian radio station interview back when yield was released and eddie said something to the effect of:

"this isnt just about a rockstar escaping (or some such) - but in general just a person escaping the daily grind and the 'race'. taking a few days off to recuperate. like 4 days, but only 4 days, 4 weeks is unacceptable"

yeah i know my memory sucks....but that was the gist of it...anyone else hear that interview?

wonder where i put that tape ;)

General CommentI just wish more people knew about this song because it may be one of pearl jam's best. Great guitar work and great lyrics. It just that song that you find yourself singing for days to yourself.

General CommentAwesome song!.. I only have this song on a live CD and i love it! when he sings it he changed the words to "I turned and blocked the hallway" instead of "i turned and walked the hallway" and he also says "I swallow the truth to keep from lying" instead of "i swallow my words to keep from lying".. Eddie is truly a genuis for writing all his awesome songs.

General Commentone of the best Pearl Jam songs ever YIELD is a very underrated album that deserved more..id rank it right there with TEN and VS,this song will always take me back to summer-fall of 1998 when for me at least life was more simple..i know this isnt a song meaning but it is what the song means to me which I think is just as important..what the song means to a person inside
