    Song MeaningI think many people are losing the basic meaning of the song by reading into it too much.

    Francis sings basically about a trio of events that he never think he'd do or witness. Hence why he screams in the chorus "I'm Amazed", as in "I can't believe: my wife shot her own head on the day I married her/I played with a ball of string (seriously, other than cats, who does?)/ I'd leave the place I live, and drive my Honda (that small car) and head for Arizona."

    Heck, the intro may seem unrelated, but it's actually consistent with the song itself, Kim talks about her teacher who got fired after getting caught harrassing the hockey players and the school was really quiet about it. And that's what amazed her: the whole BS attitude of the school board, more than the act itself which by itself it's rather "amazing." - Kickass riff, BTW, great song to rock out to.

    General CommentThe little spoken interlude isn't a part of the song. It has been recorded and performed live before and after Surfer Rosa, and never had anything to do with the field hockey banter.

    I doubt the above lyrics are correct anyway; they happen to rhyme throughout the song. For instance:

    And when I was a little boy
    A ball of string my favorite toy (I'm amazed)

    The day before that I was wed
    She went upstairs and shot her head (I'm amazed)

    Also, before Albini got his hands on it, it had this extra section, with the lyrics "all broke hearts will all mend, all broke hearts will all mend"

    As for its meaning . . . maybe something to do with trying to mend severed ties?

    General CommentThe lyrics are very clear in both the Purple Tape and in Surfer Rosa that it's

    Well when I was a little boy
    A ball of string was my favorite toy

    And the spoken prelude isn't even on the Purple Tape, so it's deffinitely not part of the song.

    I wish I knew what this song meant...

    General Commentskitr is right, most everyone gets those words wrong, "So I applied basically, I went out for the team" - definitely speaking in the voice of whomever Kim is talking about, or maybe speaking for Kim, jokingly, just like YOU FUCKIN DIE. When she found out he was into field hockey players SHE went out for the team. Jokingly.
