Tales of a Scorched Earth Lyrics
And let me be, let me die inside
Let me know the way from of this world of hate in you
'Cause the die is cast and the bitch is back
And we're all dead yeah we're all dead
Inside the future of a shattered past
I lie just to be real, and I'd die just to feel
Why do the same old things keep on happening?
Because beyond my hopes there are no feelings
For knowing better, for knowing this
'Cause you're all whores and I'm a fag
And I've got no mother and I've got no dad
To save me the wasted, save me from myself
I lie just to be real, and I'd die just to feel
Why do the same old things keep on happening?
Because beyond my hopes there are no feelings
Everyone's a thought just waiting to fade
So fuck it all 'cause I don't care
So what somehow somewhere we dared
To try to dare, to dare for a little more, yeah yeah
I lie to just to be real, and I'd die just to feel
Why do the same old things keep on happening?
Because beyond my hopes there are no reasons

the whole of Mellon Collie is about life. from the beautiful, delicate points of it to the dirty, hopelessness in it, and everything in between. this one quite effectively describes the anger, the heat, the pure flaming octane of those moments in life. The album wouldnt be complete without it. Life is happiness, joy, beauty, moodiness, anger, hopelessness, mindlessness, fury, emptiness, ambition, etc. This song portrays those more furious points.

this is a great song... even just reading the lyrics i could feel the total anger and hopelessness radiating off it, and listening to the song doubles that feeling, it's amazing. i also like how it contrasts a lot with the next song, thru the eyes of ruby, which talks about innocence and actually believing in something, be it only a girl.

the trouble with having so many brilliant songs is that so many get over looked....(not that thats such a bad thing i guess)
these lyircs are from the booklet but their not exact to the ones he sings.
this is such a well written song... how pointless life is... and all the anger and hoplessness that goes with that feeling.

when I listen to the verse Wurby Tictoc posted, I hear the last line as "And time is everything and I have no hope"
the song is about that point when you're incredibly angry and unhappy and just want to be left alone, and how the things you've done in the past don't stop affecting you...
for a long time I hated this song, but as I got into the whole Gothenburg scene, I started to love it. It's one of my favorite of the pumpkins "metal" songs, next to Zero, and maybe geek usa.

how come so many people hate this song? i love it so much, the guitar is awesome and i think the distorted vocals are cool even though they are kind of painful sounding

I know that back in the 1800s there was a "Scorched Earth Policy" where the Russians (?) were burning everything in their trail. This could be a song about things from the past that never seem to leave. There are no stopping some things...and I agree with the hoplessness as stated above.

this is far and away the worst song on Melon Collie...apparently killroy likes it, and i'll grant you i've never listened to it the whole way throgh, but that's b/c i've never made it the whole way through w/out being sick of it...

i love this song, i guess kilroy and i are the only two in the entire universe... i love the utter despair and anger at the fact that even through all of our hopes for life to get better, in the end it all turns out bad

Definately one of my favourites. The sound is awesome and the lyrics are great as usual.
"cause you're all whores and i'm a fag and i've got no mother and i've got no dad"

Why is it that if you ask any given SP fan what song they like the least, it's always this one (Talking about the first three albumsof course)? Ok, I thought the vocals were terribly distorted at first, but soon they sank in, and the main riff is crushing! "You all hoes, and I'm a fag / And I've got mother and I've got no dad" MMMmm..! Anger.
