Could It Be Any Harder Lyrics
A cut so deep I don't deserve
You were always invincible in my eyes
the only thing against us now is time
Could it be any harder to say goodbye and without you,
Could it be any harder to watch you go, to face what's true
If I only had one more day
A quick fix of hope is what I'm needing
And now i wish that i could turn back the hours
But i know i just don't have the power
I'd jump at the chance
We'd drink and we'd dance
And I'd listen close to your every word,
As if its your last, I know its your last,
Cause today, oh, you're gone
The smell of sweet perfume
You stick to me forever,baby
and I wish you didn't go,
I wish you didn't go
I wish you didn't go away
To touch you again,
With life in your hands
It couldn't be any harder

So I get the feeling this guy is talking about someone close to him who has died. But it could also be interpreted as a relationship ending where both people agree to part, but one of them is still deeply in love with the other. What you think?

The reason why I feel that Alex is referring to a dead lover is the line:
"To say goodbye, without you"
The realisation that he is having to say farewell without being able to see her face or hear her voice. They are not able to share their last moments together knowing that they will be their last. It is such a sad notion and can be applied to any relationship, with family or a lover, which has been cut short by death.

I like to this they were torn apart in some day. distance or perhaps death. I always thought love could overcome anything but sometimes circumstances are a bit much. A great song. very sad

I think this relationship was torn apart by death, and he wants just one more day with her. He is at the point where he thinks it can't get any worse. Very Sad song. I like the feeling in his voice, it sounds so sincere.

i agree i think it is talking about someone close to him who has died. especially when he says "To touch you again,/With life in your hands" that seems to imply the person is dead.

I agree with you all. The feeling in his voice along with the lyrics implies death. It seems like they were sick for a while but in the end it beat the person, like in the line "You were always invincible in my eyes the only thing against us now is time"

Despite the great implications towards death I still feel this is towards distance or a breakup. It fits for me with my only ex I've had. I don't deserve my scars that I have mentally (though it could easily be physically in other peoples' cases) and I don't deserve this guilt that lays on me. Then how he says there is only time now that stands against us, it seems to refer to how the clock is winding down towards when everything will have been worn out and no longer able to function. Like a relationship can receive too many blows, that make it lose the foundation it once had. It's like maybe that once last blow to their relationship was some important marking in them, like a prom or something more serious. If it was then it would easily explain the transition about how he'd jump at the chance for one more date, and one more slow dance-because he just doesn't want to let go. A lot of times when it gets to this point too hard to even speak to each other. In my case, I remained a very close friend with him but it's never been revived. And so if I were able to touch this guys hand when it still had life in it, would be so relieving. Because my situation right now is, I can't turn back, there is no friendship, and he IS suicidal..Which is no longer something I can cure, though I used to be able to. So as easy this song is to display an unwanted death, I think it might also be the end to a traumating breakup from a long term relationship as well.

I dont know what you guys are talking about...but I am Canadian:D

I think the only death in this song is the end of a really meaningful relationship (friendship could also be included). The singer seems like they didn't apreciate the time they had with a special someone (neighbor, best friend, lover, whatnot) and now that the other party has gone (died, etc.) the interpreter is finaly realizing what he/she had. It's that age old situation: You don't know what you've got till it's gone. It does seem like the singer would apreciate the person more if they had "one more day", but one more day is just one too many for the inspiration of the song.

well whether this song is supposed to interpret someone close dying or have a relationship torn apart it is an awesome song... and everytime i listen to it i think about a relationship that i had that ended and it makes me cry. 'Like sand on my feet, the smell of sweet perfume, you stick to me forever baby'
