Well, it can be interpreted in both ways. I mean, even if the song is about weed, it still works as a song about a girl and if you like it that way... I'm sure the band knew they had a double meaning there.
I doesn't matter to me what they had in mind writing the song. I say if it means something different to you, go with it. The band must have known that would happen or else they would have called it "The Weed Song".
