I see this song as being about a friend who may not be your best friend or someone you see all the time, but you have a connection with the person that is different from any other connection you have with other people...all of people's relationships are different from one person to the next..

alanis said this song is about falling in love with someone who is so unapologetically himself all time. the who idea that this guy freestyles just shows that the guy does his own thing and not conforming and this is what she loves about it.

This reminds me of my little sister. I think it's just about how great it is to be around someone who is unafraid to be totally herself (or himself) and therefore gives you the confidence to be yourself. The whole "let's discuss things in confidence / let's be outspoken let's be ridiculous / let's solve the world's problems" is about the conversations you have with someone like that, where you can just be completely comfortable and speak any idea that comes to you and enjoy it along with the other person.
