Close
Naked
Skin on skin
Tears are falling
Tears of joy
Her first boy
His first girl
Makes a change

In a world full of nothing
Though it's not love
It means something

She's lonely
And he says
It's for her only
That he lusts
She doesn't trust him
Nothing is true
But he will do

In a world full of nothing
Though it's not love
It means something

It's easy to slip away
And believe it all

Though it's not love
It means something

I love this song - served me well during many steamy sessions in my car in high school. Anyway, there really isn't anything sweet about this song. It is rather sad.

Sure, the song has a maudlin element to it - but it is ultimately sad. It is about the lack of meaning in ones first sexual encounter. The lyric, "though it's not love it means something" is insincere. The narrator doesn't really believe it means "something".

Instead the narrator states, "it's easy to slip away and believe it all". The narrator is speaking to themself - trying to convince themself that the encounter meant "something". In reality it meant nothing.

Sad, empty song. Not sweet. Yet brilliant DM.

I think it speaks of how we live in a world where people hardly get their fills, often left in the world wondering about what it all means, looking for meaning in a cruel place, it's about finding solace, even if it's not the real thing, the need to find comfort somehow, will lead in believing illusions, settling for some other substitute for love, because it offers a little meaning to life, that might be a fruit of naivité but still can take some place, and help you get by this world full of nothing.

This is such a sweet simple song. It best describes any first sexual encounter. Even though the person you lost your virginity to may not be your soulmate. Everyone remembers them.

I agree that it's about the first "sexual encounter," and that you get carried away and later realize its true worth, or lack thereof. It reminds me of my first serious SERIOUS relationship, though we didn't have sex or anything (I was 14/15 and it was a year ago). The serious tone of the song also reminds me of how the relationship was so serious, we hardly ever laughed and often "bonded" (not in a dirty sense) in private by just quietly holding hands or whatnot. We were both "lonely" as the song states, there was the "lust" as the song states, and MAN did I slip away and believe it all... I also feel that I can relate to the slight hint of regret in the song as well, though mine is less subtle. Black Celebration is by far DM's best album to date.

After years of listening... thousands of plays it hits me because I bi-passed the lyrics, because I wasn't mature enough? The feeling is still there... and it scratches through nostalgia. Its simplicity it's rather put well. I agree with everyone here about "first sexual encounter". It is an empty, bitter, hollow... magnificent feeling.

"Though it's not love, it means something"

Great line. I will always remember the first person and there is nothing I can do about it, although in my case it never meant anything.

Wow! This song is SO TRUE! At least for me. I think this song isnt just about sex as must as it is about romance. The chorus line really says it all: your first lover/bf/gf is almost Never your 'soulmate' but you never forget that person. When I was with my first gf I knew I wasnt really ready for a serious relationship yet she seemed so right for me. I told her I loved her, I meant it, but she new even then that is was only the heat of the moment.

    It means something

    of course it does

If you remember it it means something

I don't think it is so sad

    I think its ... different

Shes bitter, can't trust him, doesnt want to believe him He'll do anything he can to show her that he'll always love her

Maybe he wotn. after all, 'Ots not love'

    Buit he doesnt know that

he think it is, he thinks its forever#and isnt that good enough?

and its easy to slip away and belive it all

shes giving up, she going to trust him. i cant see the sadness. I think theres hope in thid song.

Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.

Trouble Breathing

While the obvious connections with suicide or alcoholism could be drawn easily, more subtly this song could be about someone who views the world through a negative lens constantly and how as much as the writer tries to show the beauty in the world, this person refuses to see it. It's one or another between the rope and the bottle. There is no good option for this person. They can't see it. Skiba sings it in a kind of exasperated way like He's tired of hearing this negative view constantly and just allowing that person to continue feeling the way they feel knowing he can't do anything about it. You can hear it when he says maybe you're a vampire.

Another Love

I think the meaning is pretty clear. This person got really burned in a previous relationship, and because of this is unable to love and show care in his present one, even though he so badly wants to. It's lovely song, and very sad. You can really feel how defeated and frustrated he is with himself.

Somewhere Only We Know
Keane
Per the FAQ on Keane's website, Keane's drummer Richard Hughes, stated the following: "We've been asked whether "Somewhere Only We Know" is about a specific place, and Tim has been saying that, for him, or us as individuals, it might be about a geographical space, or a feeling; it can mean something individual to each person, and they can interpret it to a memory of theirs... It's perhaps more of a theme rather than a specific message... Feelings that may be universal, without necessarily being totally specific to us, or a place, or a time..." With the nostalgic sentiment and the overall tone of the song, I think Keane is attempting to express a Portuguese term known as 'saudade', which does not have a direct English translation but roughly means "that which we remember because it is gone."

Just listening for the 784,654th time....and it's just perfect in every way. Just incredible. The only reason it was remade was to scoop up a boatload of money from a more modern and accepting audience. But it is a completely different song than the other one that sounds slapped together in a few takes without a thought for the meaning. This song captivates me still, after 50+ years. Takes me to the deep South and the poverty of some who lived thru truly hard times. And the powerful spirit of a poor young girl being abandoned to her future with only a red dress and her wits to keep her alive. She not only stayed alive, she turned her hard beginnings around, became self sufficient, successful and someone with respect for herself. She didn't let the naysayers and judgers stop her. She's the one sitting in the drivers seat at the end. So, not a song about a poor girl, but a song of hope and how you can rise up no matter how far down you started. There is a huge difference between a singer who simply belts out a song that is on a page in front of them, and someone who can convey an entire experience with their voice. Telling not just a story with words, but taking you inside it and making you feel like you are there, with their interpretation.
