I want you to remember
A love so full it could send us all ways
I want you to surrender
All my feelings rose today
And I want you to remain
The power of children can amaze
I'll try not to complain
I know that's a pisser baby

The chemicals between us
The walls that lie between us
Lying in this bed
The chemicals displaced
There is no lonelier place
Than lying in this bed

I want you to remember
Everything you said
Every driven word
Like a hammer, held, to my head

The chemicals between us
There is no lonelier place
Then lying in this bed
The chemicals displaced
There is no lonelier place
Than lying in this bed

The chemicals between us
The chemicals between us
Lying in this bed

We're of the hollow men
We are the naked ones
We never meant you harm
Never meant you wrong
I'd like to thank
All of my lovers, lovers, lovers

The chemicals between us
The army of achievers
Lying in this bed
The chemicals displaced
There is no lonelier face
Than lying in this bed

The chemicals between us
The chemicals between us
The chemicals

The chemicals between us

Really seems to be to be talking about the demhumanisation of love, breaking it down into simple hormonal consciousness and nothing more. All human interactions are nothing more than reponses to pass on blind genes. Frightening thought.

... reminds me of the "guy who got away" how i unintentionally hurt him... yet things were going so well... it could go both ways too... i could want him to remeber every sweet thing he said to me... OR, the tables can be turned.. and he could want me to remeber all teh sweet things i said.. or even the things i said that hurt him... *sigh* i wish i could break this brick wall :x

i think that this song is not only about communication problems, but specifically talking about the ending phase of a relationship..that it feels empty. when he say "there is no lonlier place/than lying in this bed" he is saying that basically the relationship has just amounted to meaningless sex. the "chemicals" is basically all that there is left in the relationship..no real love anymore. it's pretty sad.

    My Opinion
@SunPisT! & a few others pretty much got it right IMO. At that point (at the "end chapter" of a relationship - what's basically left is the chemicals between us (which may've been what brought them together to begin with - but wasn't enough to sustain it indefinitely). Whether "the chemicals" refers to the basic hormonal signals that message & attract other mammals, or perhaps even those other prolific "chemicals" (such as "party favors") that also often act to (initially anyway) bring two humans together. Often "animal" attraction - or common substance use/abuse as a bond between 2 people - isn't quite strong enough to keep people together forever. Not an expert (but am well experienced at least) - just a hopeless Gemini offering dual observational possibilities

I consider this THE best Bush song - the way the words and music flow together... The music is the best part of this song - I could listen to it without the lyrics - but they are good too.

Is anyone absolutely sure that these are EXACTLY the correct lyrics? It seems to me that the second line should be (and sounds to me like): "A love so full it consumed us always" - Just a thought :)

the lyrics on Bush's offical site are slightly different: i want you to remember :: a love so full it could send us always :: i want you to surrender :: all my feelings rose today :: and i want you to remain :: the power of children can amaze :: i'll try not to complain :: i know that's a pisser baby the chemicals between us the walls that lie :: between us lying in this bed the chemicals :: displaced there is no lonelier place than :: lying in this bed i want you to remember everything you said :: every driven word :: like a hammer fell to my head we're of hollow men we are the naked ones :: we never meant you harm :: never meant you wrong :: i'd like to thank :: all of my lovers lovers lovers the chemicals between us :: the army of achievers :: lying in this bed :: there is no lonelier face :: than lying in this bed

awesome song, definitely my favorite from the band, although i can't say i agree with you t-crash about them being like nirvana. i don't think their style is very close to grunge.
