I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
i can tell by the sound of your voice. that you probably slept in your clothes again. and haven't left the house all day. you're writing in your diary about how things just never seem to work out. and this time came closer than ever before. to you falling on your sword. but tomorrow is another day. chin up kid. never say die. and don't let them see you cry. slow down. stop your hurrying and sing with me. calm down. stop your worrying and sing with me. and finally it comes to pass. like water in a broken glass. you cut yourself to save the spill. ignore the pain and drink your fill. don't leave tonight without saying goodbye. we'll be home soon. i'll be thinking of you all the time. and if you miss me close your eyes and sing with me. we can be anything we want together. everything we ever wanted for each other. because it's us against the world

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

While the obvious connections with suicide or alcoholism could be drawn easily, more subtly this song could be about someone who views the world through a negative lens constantly and how as much as the writer tries to show the beauty in the world, this person refuses to see it. It's one or another between the rope and the bottle. There is no good option for this person. They can't see it. Skiba sings it in a kind of exasperated way like He's tired of hearing this negative view constantly and just allowing that person to continue feeling the way they feel knowing he can't do anything about it. You can hear it when he says maybe you're a vampire.
This is the story of my life... nothing seems to work out and I always worry about everything... my boy told me to listen to this song one night and it just made me cry because it was very real to our situation.... anyways, it's hope for another day
whoa this song is amazing..fits perfectly to my life...I only wish I had a boy to tell me to listen to this..like fadkingxthexkisses...your l;ucky...
i love this song. nothing ever works out for me. im so sick of looking forward to things, because they either a] never happen or b] make me cry. i love the whole simile thing with the water in a broken glass. it makes me smile. wow...that hasnt happened in forever. *Lina
This is the first song I heard by Brandtson... I fell in love with it immediately... I told my friend to download it... she did, she loved it... But I wonder if she realized that i had a reason for having her listen to it... who knows...
I know this song was probably written as friend to friend, but I always looked at this song as from God's point of view to us. "it's us against the world", and "We'll be home soon", and "if you miss me, close your eyes and sing with me". Dunno. I'm a "psycho christian girl". I know I've always hated stereotypes, but man... that one's really fun to scare people with. Benny Perez told my youth group that if we just freak out and start speaking in tongues in our math class that nobody would talk for at least half an hour. craziness.
oh, and I just wanted to add that this song has such a hopeful message for everybody out there. I know the world hurts, but we just have to understand that that's because the world doesn't care. I hate to go all Jesus freaky on everyone...(wait, no I don't), but He wants to take care of us and He wants to bless us like no one else can... and the world just doesn't care. anyways, that's all I have to say. and that when you feel like the person in this song, just keep thinking that there's someone out there (even if you don't believe in God) who cares about you or who would if you would just give them a chance to...
actually guys this song was written by the lead singer Myk to his girlfriend Jill. She owns the best record shop in Cleveland, Ohio Chris's Warped Records...well anyway...she was upset with the fact that things weren't going right in life and the fact that he was on tour didn't help any...but dyingnewbrunswick has a good take on it because there is a christian kick to it...it just happens to be a love song too
