Awaken Lyrics
I'm dead awoken
And I'm faded out of breath
Life falls to grey
Hope of the hopeless
And I pray without a prayer
Cut my cover down
In the hollow between
You find the venom in me
Rip my world apart
In the sorrow beneath
You find a devil in me
I awaken, I arise
I still hear the call of life
I'm taken by the tide
Hope of the hopeless
And now only lost remain
Tear my head apart
A broken life has left me by the
Past
I awaken, I arise
I still hear the call of life
I'm taken by the tide
Stay forever in the light
I awaken, I survive
And I still hear the call of life
I'm taken by the tide
I awaken, I arise
I still hear the call of life
I'm taken by the tide
Stay forever in the light
I awaken, I survive
And I still hear the call of life
I'm taken by the tid
Upon first glance, one would assume the songs lyrics are about awakening from a near-death situation, but the lyrical context makes it seem like the protagonist has died, and is now awakening in the afterlife.
For me, the most telling lyric in this song (for what it's about/means) isn't even written right on here - "A broken life has left me born to burn" (not "by the past") is the sort of thing I (as a longtime, diehard BB fan) have come to expect hearing from a lyricist like Ben, who has spoken about his regrets for ever drinking (as an alcoholic who once "wanted to drink himself to death" to numb anxiety/depression, and came out the other side of that with Wernicke-Korsakoff [syndrome] and other chronic pain). Ultimately, this song screams "I went to a place so dark I almost died, but when I saw the light it was life [instead of death/the end, as this word can often be associated with] so I let the tide pull me back". Feels like an anthem to anyone who "made it out/came out the other side" of (or awakened from) major depression or substance abuse/addiction
