Break my soul in two
Looking for you but you're right here
If I can't relate to you anymore
Then who am I related to?
And if this is the long haul
How'd we get here so soon?
Did I close my fist around something delicate?
Did I shatter you?

And I'm sitting on a bench in Coney Island wondering where did my baby go?
The fast times, the bright lights, the merry go
Sorry for not making you my centerfold

Over and over
Lost again with no surprises
Disappointments, close your eyes
And it gets colder and colder
When the sun goes down

The question pounds my head
"What's a lifetime of achievement?"
If I pushed you to the edge
But you were too polite to leave me
And do you miss the rogue
Who coaxed you into paradise and left you there?
Will you forgive my soul
When you're too wise to trust me and too old to care?
'Cause we were like the mall before the Internet
It was the one place to be
The mischief, the gift wrapped suburban dreams
Sorry for not winning you an arcade ring

Over and over
Lost again with no surprises
Disappointments, close your eyes
And it gets colder and colder
When the sun goes down

Were you waiting at our old spot
In the tree line by the gold clock
Did I leave you hanging every single day?
Were you standing in the hallway
With a big cake, happy birthday
Did I paint your bluest skies the darkest gray?
A universe away
And when I got into the accident
The sight that flashed before me was your face
But when I walked up to the podium
I think that I forgot to say your name

I'm on a bench in Coney Island wondering where did my baby go?
The fast times, the bright lights, the merry go
Sorry for not making you my centerfold
Over and over

Lost again with no surprises
Disappointments, close your eyes
And it gets colder and colder
When the sun goes down
When the sun goes down

The sight that flashed before me was your face
When the sun goes down
But I think that I forgot to say your name
Over and over
Sorry for not making you my
Making you my
Making you my centerfold

What the artist means The drums are kicking in and Taylor Swift is gliding through the sky. She just broke her soul into two, but that didn't stop the tragedy from happening. She's looking for him, even though he's right here. She can't relate to him anymore, it's so hard when you're not on the same wavelength with a so-called lover. She's sitting on a bench on a lonely island wondering where her baby went, even though it's quite clear that it was her that chased him away. The National frontman doesn't mince words, he asks his lover why she refused to leave him, even though he pushed her to the edge. Taylor Swift replies that it goes way deeper than all of these, that their love tale goes beyond the internet, it's actually a forever thing, till the sun goes down. He's matching her lyric for lyric, and analyzing what happened when he had a ghastly accident as the last thing that he saw was her face. Both artists are ultra-sorry now, as they regret not making each other the centerfold, even though that's what they wanted and deserved.

What the song means to me This duet might have looked so unlikely to succeed on paper, but it is undoubtedly one of the strongest records I've heard so far on the album. As both artistes simply ate the beat up, they sounded in tandem, and that resulted into something quite magical. The track makes me feel right at ease, it makes me feel like taking that risk, or telling my lover all the things I adore about her, because you could never tell how tomorrow would be. I will give this song a rating of 9/10.

Taylor Swift's 'coney island' features some of the album's best callbacks as it features The National. Swift here faces a relationship at its tail end. This song features several different lines from her previous work, both verbally and in spirit. This is a nod to her previous albums and lyrics. 'coney island' has some of the most mournful lyrics of evermore. Swift laments, "Break my soul in two/ Looking for you, but you're right here/ If I can't relate to you anymore/ Then who am I related to?". She remembers all the great memories they had together but does not want her lover to face a lifetime of regret. Wondering, "What’s a lifetime of achievement?/ If I pushed you to the edge/ But you were too polite to leave me”. ‘coney island’ is a song that mourns what once was. Still, in her lover's interests, Swift is willing to let them go and not face the regret of staying with her when they become older.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
