Searching for the meaning of life
Even the tiniest of clues
But it doesn’t exist
I hate to be the bringer of bad news
It’s all a painful journey from black to black
No heaven or an afterlife
You’re never coming back
Brainwashed in school to be commodist fools
Enslaved and forced to live by unwritten rules
Like how we’re gonna act when we’re a certain age
We’re all puppets acting on a fucking stage
We put on a mask to hide how we really feel
We conceal everything that’s really real
The truth is that we’re all lobotomized
Held in shackles and chains to act civilized
We’re all seconds away from an early grave
Do you really want to spend your whole life a slave?
You get nothing in return, nothing to earn
I say fuck the society, let it burn

If this is heaven I try to live in hell
I’m on death row; I can only live to tell
Life is a jail; if you breed you are the personnel
We all live and die in a prison cell
[Repeat chorus]

I was born in the wrong era as the wrong sex
I was born in the wrong world; it’s complex
I despise this planet; it’s all fucked up
The sky’s like the bars to keep us all locked up

On death row from the moment we’re born
Tiny slaves crying from the womb we’re torn
Your whole fucking life is all planned ahead
From the cord is cut
Till you’re in the grave dead
Mapped out from the very first breath
Education and work, retirement and death
Brainwashed to not feel your own misery
So you can be a little puppet
Slavery
And we’ll never get the chance to break free
But at least we can choose to see reality
That life is a prison, it will forever be
A population of inmates; that’s all I see

If this is heaven I try to live in hell
I’m on death row; I can only live to tell
Life is a jail; if you breed you are the personnel
We all live and die in a prison cell
[Repeat chorus]

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.

American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.
