Fool's Gold Lyrics

You don't like rollercoasters, how could you ever love a girl like me?
I took you to the end of my street so you could see my bones
Look up with a promise to you, our stars came in a packet of two

She's walking up to you, she's dying to be by your side
She's walking up to you, she's dying to be by your side
Fool's gold, shining in the night, so easy on the eyes
Fool's gold, how many times do I have to realise?
Fool's gold, so bright, fooling everyone in sight
Fool's gold, how many times do I have to realise?

I won't bend to you, no - I don't know how to
Can you handle a girl like her?
She is bolder than you think
And you'd love a girl like me
Well she is running through your dreams
Dragged through the midnight, and it reignites

She's walking up to you, she's dying to be by your side
She's walking up to you, she's dying to be by your side
Fool's gold, shining in the night, so easy on the eyes
Fool's gold, how many times do I have to realise?
Fool's gold, so bright, fooling everyone in sight
Fool's gold, how many times do I have to realise?

She's walking up to you, she's dying to be by your side
She's walking up to you,
Fool's gold, shining in the night, so easy on the eyes
(She's dying to be by your side)
Fool's gold, how many times do I have to realise?
(She's walking up to you)
Fool's gold, so bright, fooling everyone in sight
Fool's gold, how many times do I have to realise?
(She's walking up to you)
Fool's gold, shining in the night, so easy on the eyes
Fool's gold, how many times do I have to realise?
(She's walking up to you)
Fool's gold, so bright, fooling everyone in sight
Fool's gold, how many times do I have to realise?
(She's walking up to you)

Love this song! From what I gather its about a shy girl who feels she is destined to be with a boy, but another more beautiful and confident girl is drawing his attention.

"Look up with a promise to you, our stars came in a packet of two" indicate the feeling/certainty of destiny, like they are star crossed lovers and soulmates.

The start of the verses, "You don't like rollercoasters, how could you ever love a girl like me?" and "I won't bend to you, no - I don't know how to" demonstrates the singers lack of confidence that she doesn't know how to make a move and convinces herself that she can't despite feeling destined to be with him.

Then comes the other girl who she describes as "fools gold", which refers to the brassy yellow mineral people often mistook for gold. This girl is clearly confident and pretty, which allows her to do things like "walking up to you" and get what she wants, "she's dying to be by your side". The singer feels the boy and everyone else mistakes real connection with this girl because she is beautiful and confident, "Fool's gold, so bright, fooling everyone in sight". Meanwhile she considers herself to be the real gold that represents the rare and valuable connection she could have with this guy if he could see past the luster of the fools gold.

"how many times do i have to realise" has a little more ambiguity. The 'how many times' might indicate she has been friendzoned with this guy as he constantly falls for different girls or fools gold. In this case what she is realising that she is just breaking her own heart over and over again waiting for him to want her. It might also be referring to her envy and how many times does she have to let this 1 other girl make a move before she realises she has to make one herself so that she can shine for him.

From Jack River: “I was alone in New York, chasing shiny things. The verses were spinning around my head,” says Jack River on writing the song. “I was annoyed at myself for falling for the same things over again without them giving back. But I also knew how human it was to feel like that, and how I’d probably come up against this feeling again and again. I wanted to write a song for that emotion – the relentless humanity in thinking something is gold when it just isn’t.” Read more at http://musicfeeds.com.au/tv/jack-river-fools-gold/#crmZX6ELBw032zOQ.99
