The only way to escape this
Is to lock the door.
I can’t get out,
I’m free once more.

But just for now,
Until the cravings come around,
Until the silence just gets too loud,
Until these sheets become my shroud.

I need you,
I need to feel you close,
I need another dose,
‘Cos you’re the only one, it’s true
Who can stop me feeling blue.

Filthy room,
Bereft of any semblance of life,
No future for me,
Just these spikes.

I can’t handle this no more,
I don’t want to be set free,
‘Cos I love it when we rush,
Love to feel you pulse through me.
And it’s driving me insane,
When you wander through my vein,
And I don’t even know your name,
And I don’t even know my name,
And I rue the day you came,
I’m thankful for the day you came,
The day you pushed me right off course,
The day you only made things worse.

I need you,
I need to feel you close,
I need another dose,
‘Cos you’re the only one, it’s true
Who can stop me feeling blue.

Picture the universe,
With me on the outside looking in.
Shaking my head in disgust,
And a hatred of everything.

I love you more than I have
Loved anyone I’ve ever known.
And I hate you because,
I hate the fact you can do this to me.

You’re an addiction,
You’re a power plug,
You’re my oxygen,
You’re my favourite drug,
And you’re killing me,
Yes you’re killing me,
But you set me free,
And I need to know…

Will you let me go?
Will you take me away?
You’re just what I long for,
Each time I die a little more,
And my palace has shrunk,
It’s a tiny room,
Then a dirty place,
Then a lonely tomb,
With no one to mourn,
Oh, what a fool he’s been,
Brought it on himself,
Worshipped the wrong Queen,
Took a hit too much,
Reality lost touch,
What a legacy!
What a legacy!

But I need you,
I need to feel you close,
I need another dose,
‘Cos you’re the only one, it’s true
Who can stop me feeling blue.
That is why I look so blue.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
