There's a new strange
Godless demon awake, inside me
There's a force divine
Terrorizing the angels I keep
While we dream

Prayers (prayers)
Lay on the line (lay on the line)
You'll never be free (you'll never be free)
You'll never be free (you'll never be free)
(Free, free, free)

I'm a true slave
To the fire and the air around you
While this curse divine
It's slowly rotting away, inside me
While we dream

Prayers (prayers)
Lay on the line (lay on the line)
You'll never be free (you'll never be free)
You'll never be free
Triangles (triangles)
Placed in your mind (placed in your mind)
You'll never be free
You'll never be free

Beware
Beware
Beware
Beware

I will never walk this street again
The only time I feel I'm not alone
I pull my heart out, I wave it in the air

Prayers (prayers)
Laid on the line (lay on the line)
You'll never be free (you'll never be free)
You'll never be free
Triangles (triangles)
Placed in your mind (placed in your mind)
You'll never be free
You'll never be free
Prayers (prayers)
Triangles (triangles)
Laid on the line (lay on the line)
You'll never be free, you'll never be free

I will never walk this street again
The only time I feel I'm not alone
I pull my heart out, I wave it in the air
I pull my heart out, I wave it in the air

My idea of this song is that it's about someone that doesn't love himself but finds love in someone else and how he would be a slave to that love even tho his self hatred is slowly rotting him away. That unlovingness towards himself will never let him be free and the love he keeps ends up Leaving him because he can't love himself. he never wants to fall in love again because no one sees how big of a heart he has even when he shows it so much.

Maybe it's about loosing faith in christian religion.

the triangle could stand for trinity. the father, the son and the holy ghost. There's a new strange godless deamon inside so the feelings and thoughts that previously where controlled by the christian ideals could have slowly been replaced by something new, pulling him away from that faith.

He quarrels with the decision to change his path (beware, you'll never be free) but the old faith isn't strong enough to stop the change.(terrorize the angels I keep, I'll never walk this streets again)

Another definition of 'Triangle' is - a situation involving three people especially an emotional relationship involving a couple and a third person. This leads me to believe that this can have something to do with an obsession with someone other than the one he/she is committed to that has kept inside and eating away at him. "There's a force divine terrorizing the Angels I keep" He wants to be good and faithful but can't escape the impure thoughts he is having about another which is a sin under gods eyes.
"I am s true slave to the fire and air around you" Maybe this means he can't resist the light/glow and appearance of this person. "While this curse divine. It's slowly rotting away inside me" This uncontrollable force has taken over his subconscious mind and can't do anything about it. "While we dream" This may indicate it's possibly mutual feelings. "Prayers laid on the line" It sounds like he knows it's wrong but can't seem to stop how he is feeling and one wrong move can cause devastation to his loved ones and his integrity. "You'll never be free" can have two meanings. It can mean he is talking about himself in the second person like he'll never be free to express how he really feels. It can also mean he is talking about the mutual feelings and the significant other is not available either. "I will never walk this street again! The only time I feel I'm not alone" He fears he will never get to have a person where he feels whole or as one with another again. "I pull my heart out, I wave it in the air" Not sure if this is a personal battle with himself to prove to himself he is a good person. Maybe means he wishes he can express his feelings to this person but "beware" the detrimental consequences of making it known.

Maybe I'm really off but it was fun to break down.

I think this is about how we're slaves to the dogmas we believe in. Triangles are often used in a spiritual context -- they represent different deities: the holy trinity (like horriblehorst mentioned), pyramids meant for worship, and even in masonry the triangular shape is considered sacred. I'm sure there's more examples that link triangles and spiritual beliefs.

I guess one of the possible interpretations of the song is to "beware" that prayers and triangles placed in your mind can emprison you (you'll never be free).

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
