Couldn't relax, couldn't sit back
And let the sunlight in my lap
I sang a hymn to bring me peace
And then it came, a melody

It felt so sweet, it felt so strong
It made me feel like I belonged
And all the sadness inside me
Melted away like I was free

I found what I'd been looking for in myself
Found a life worth living for someone else
Never thought that I could be, I could be
Happy, happy

Don't go out much at all
I've never been the type to call
I realize to be happy
Maybe I need a little company

So now you know, you know it all
That I've been des-desperately alone
I haven't found the one for me
But I believe in divinity

I found what I'd been looking for in myself
Found a life worth living for someone else
Never thought that I could be, I could be
Happy, happy

I believe in possibility
I believe someone's watching over me
And finally I have found a way to be
Happy, happy

From the concrete to the coast
I was looking for a Holy Ghost
Like the land joining the sea
Happiness, it followed me

I believe in possibility
I believe someone's watching over me
And finally I have found a way to be
Happy, happy, happy

    Song Meaning

This song sounds a little sad to some people; that's because you need to listen to the surprised and joyful sound in her voice when she says "happy". This song is from the mind of a girl that has been depressed for so very long, and she didn't think she would ever get better. She never thought she could be happy; she never thought anyone could love her. Then out of the darkness there comes a moment when she realizes she is happy. She is so surprised, because she never thought she could be happy again. Now she likes herself more and can accept the love of another, because now she thinks she deserves it. Some people say it sounds sad, and it kind of does, because you can't just switch over to miss rainbowglitter after hating yourself for so long. Kurt Cobain said when you are depressed you only feel sad and when you are not sad you don't feel anything. This song is the declaration that the time I that loop of sadness is over. She is slowly getting better and recovering. Now she believes there is a God watching over her. TO ANYONE THAT FEELS HOPELESS OR LOST; LET THIS SONG REMIND YOU THAT IT WILL GET BETTER. I AM NOT LYING, MARINA GOT THROUGH OUT, I GOT THROUGH IT, YOU CAN GET THROUGH IT. JUST DON'T GIVE UP.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
