Two oceans in between us
And away for sure
There's a gate I see
There's a way for me
Now this one sits here
And whispers things to me
Now I got the Devil inside
This one made a pig of me

This world is primal
My grinding jaw
The headache pill
The necktie on my bedroom door
My conscience burning
My eyes are too
Cuddled up with a heart condemned
I should love you and I swear I do

This world is rabid
This world is through
Follow me through an empty dream
I'm sleeping next to someone new
My conscience burning
My beastly flaw
The headache pill
The necktie on my bedroom door
And I'm such a coward
These wretched things I do
Disgrace and treachery
I'm a sickness and I know its true
This world is learning
This world is pure
But she could be my Valentine
Underneath my sheets on the bedroom floor

Gonna push her down
Gonna spread her out
Gonna taste her tan
Gonna suck her fat
Gonna hold her back
Then the shameful slack
Gonna wake up dry

I don't have anything

“Two oceans in between us, and I wait for shore” He feels a humongous distance between himself and the other subject. “I wait for shore” tells me that he is waiting for a savior. I get the idea that whatever it is that he desires, he feels almost hopeless for it and he’s to the point where he’s given up taking action and he’s being passive. “There’s a gate I see, there’s a way for me” Glimmer of hope. “Now this one sits here, and whispers things to me. Now I got the devil inside. This one made a pig of me.” He gave into temptation and did something that he deems as wrong. “This world is primal, my grinding jaw.” He’s talking about a natural need and the fact that he’s grinding his jaw shows that he’s trying to hold back, further indicating that he feels it’s wrong to act upon.

“The headache pill the neck tie on my bedroom door” Headache pill probably for a hang over and a neck tie on a bedroom door is a sign that a woman is over engaging in sexual activity. Him saying “The” headache pill, makes me think that it’s “the” go to, meaning that this isn’t his first rodeo. He probably goes to bars, gets drunk and takes home random women. “My conscience burning. My eyes are too. Cuddled up with a heart condemned. I should love you and I swear I do.” He feels guilty. He wants to cry. He hurts because he doesn’t love these women. He feels guilty for using them and treating them like meat instead of loving them and treating them as living human beings and he feels that he is setting them up for heart break. Hence “cuddled up with a heart condemned”. “This world is rabid” He views his actions as cutthroat. He feels vicious doing this. He probably drops these women the very next day or acts cold towards them after he’s done with them. “Follow me through an empty dream I’m sleeping next to someone new” He has no dreams or aspirations. He’s trying to fill a void through sex. Yet it’s continuously with someone new because he doesn’t feel worthy or good enough to progress further than sex with anybody. “My beastly flaw” “I’m such a coward” he’s afraid of real intimacy. “These wretched things I do. Disgrace and treachery I’m a sickness and I know it’s true.” He feels he has a serious problem. “This world is learning. This world is pure, but she could be my Valentine underneath my sheets on the bedroom floor” This line tells me that he really is addicted to sex and that sex is all that he can provide a woman.

“Gonna push her down. Gonna spread her out. Gonna taste her tan. Gonna suck her thigh. Gonna hold her back. Then the shameful slack. Gonna wake up dry. I don’t have anything.” He is describing his pattern, showing that this is all he’s going to do and that he has nothing else for her and he feels shame from it.

the song is for sure about a relationship that is falling apart and the man leads to cheating "now this one sits here, whispers things to me." means some lady is talking to him and seducing him " my conscious burning' means he knows its wrong but it's his "beastly flaw" and 'the necktie on my bedroom door" was a sign used to tell people not to come. finally "sleeping next to someone new" pretty self explanatory really

“Two oceans in between us, and I wait for shore.” He feels a humongous distance between himself and the other subject. “I wait for shore,” tells me that he is waiting for salvation. I get the idea that whatever it is that he desires, he feels almost hopeless for it and he’s to the point where he’s given up taking action and he’s being passive by waiting for saving.

“There’s a gate I see, there’s a way for me.” Glimmer of hope.

“Now this one sits here, and whispers things to me. Now I got the devil inside. This one made a pig of me.” He gave into temptation and did something that he deems as wrong.

“This world is primal, my grinding jaw.” He’s talking about a natural desire or instinct and the fact that he’s grinding his jaw shows that he’s trying to contain himself from acting on it, further indicating that he feels it’s wrong.

“The headache pill, the necktie on my bedroom door.” Headache pill probably for a hangover and a necktie on a bedroom door is a do not disturb sign, traditionally indicating that someone is inside engaging in sexual activity.
Him saying “THE headache pill,” rather than, “A headache pill,” makes me think that this is a pattern of his. With everything said so far, my guess is that he gets drunk at brothels and sleeps with prostitutes. Especially because he says, “THIS ONE sits here and whispers things to me,” implying that there are multiple of “this one”. That could also imply that he’s referring to one woman out of all women as a whole, but because of the extreme guilt that I’m picking up on, I suspect that he is engaging in prostitution.

“My conscience burning. My eyes are too.” He feels ashamed. He’s crying.

“Cuddled up with a heart condemned, I should love you and I swear I do.” He is cuddling with someone who he believes is destined for heartache caused by his actions and lack thereof. He does not express any love for this someone, although, deep down he actually does care about them. Perhaps he feels ashamed for using these women as if they are pieces of meat, rather than loving them like human beings.

“This world is rabid." "My beastly flaw.” These lines support my hypothesis of him partaking in a brothel because it makes sense for someone to view a world which engages in prostitution and one night stands as “rabid.” He feels his actions are vicious.

“Follow me through an empty dream, I’m sleeping next to someone new.” He feels empty. He likely sleeps with new people frequently.

“I’m such a coward” What is he afraid of? My guess is that he’s afraid of true intimacy and being better.

“These wretched things I do. Disgrace and treachery, I’m a sickness and I know it’s true.” He feels he is a serious problem. He has extremely low self esteem.

“This world is learning. This world is pure, but she could be my Valentine underneath my sheets on the bedroom floor.” It’s almost like he had hope for himself, thinking that he can learn and grow, but then he quickly reverts back to his primal desire. (Whenever he says “this world,” I believe he is in a roundabout way referring to himself.) This line shows me that the part of himself that he deems as wrong is so deeply rooted in him and he is having much trouble getting rid of it. He likes it in a way. He’s attached to it.

“Gonna push her down. Gonna spread her out. Gonna taste her tan. Gonna suck her fat. Gonna blow her back. Then the shameful slack. Gonna wake up dry.” He is describing his pattern. He beats himself up for it. He feels much pain.

“I don’t have anything.” This line makes me think that he believes he has nothing valuable to offer... Like I said, extremely low self esteem.

Taking everything into account I think that his salvation is being able to heal and provide a loving committed relationship and more. At first I thought this was a song about cheating, but after diving into it, I no longer think so. I think this man is definitely single.

    My Interpretation

Seems like he was in a relationship with a perfect girl who he lost, I think to cheating, and now feels guilty and worthless.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Midnight
Ed Sheeran
“Midnight” is a song about finding a love that is so true that it provides a calming feeling through every storm. Ed Sheeran reflects on his good fortunes in landing someone with such peace and support and speaks of not fearing the dark days because he knows they’ll all end in the safety nets of her arms. “Well, good morning there / What a way to start the day / With everything laid bare,” Ed Sheeran sings in the first verse, enthusiastic to be waking up beside his woman. He apologizes for missing her calls in the second verse and promises to return them because for him, speaking to her is the most important thing. “Well, I get lost inside my head / In this chaos, you’re my calm / And I will find my feet again / ‘Cause еven the worst days of my life will always еnd / At midnight in your arms,” sings Ed Sheeran in the chorus, revelling in his good luck.

Trouble Breathing
Alkaline Trio
While the obvious connections with suicide or alcoholism could be drawn easily, more subtly this song could be about someone who views the world through a negative lens constantly and how as much as the writer tries to show the beauty in the world, this person refuses to see it. It's one or another between the rope and the bottle. There is no good option for this person. They can't see it. Skiba sings it in a kind of exasperated way like He's tired of hearing this negative view constantly and just allowing that person to continue feeling the way they feel knowing he can't do anything about it. You can hear it when he says maybe you're a vampire.
