Stay Gold Lyrics
Left us in a soft, wide-eyed haze
It shone like gold
It shone like gold
So dawn goes down today
No gold can stay
No gold can stay
What if the road won't take me there?
Oh, I wish, for once, we could stay gold
What if I fall and can't bear to get up?
Oh, I wish, for once, we could stay gold
We could stay gold, oh, gold
Top of that mountain we wanted to stand
With hearts of gold
With hearts of gold
Tomorrow is your hope at the end of the day
And gold turns gray
And gold turns gray
What if the road won't take me there?
Oh, I wish, for once, we could stay gold
What if I fall and can't bear to get up?
Oh, I wish, for once, we could stay gold
We could stay gold, oh
Of memories where I can get back
All of my dreams, they fall and form a bridge
Of memories where I can get back to you
What if the road won't take me there?
Oh, I wish, for once, we could stay gold
What if I fall and can't bear to get up?
Oh, I wish, for once, we could stay gold
We could stay gold, oh, gold
Stay gold, oh, gold

The first verse of this song owes so much to Nothing Gold Can Stay that it would almost be fair to call it a pop song re-imagining of Robert Frost's poem.
It centers on the metaphor and the theme of the poem. But rather than observing the inevitable end of childhood and adolescence from a distance, it's narrated from someone standing in that very moment. Looking back at years that just recently rushed past with melancholy and nostalgia, while feeling anxiety for what it to come.
The line "What if to love and be loved's not enough?" still gets me from time to time. It's a simple line, but in its context it perfectly sums up how scary that point in life can feel.
It's a derivative work to be sure, but as such I think it is absolutely brilliant.

Are these the official lyrics?
I hear "What if my hard work ends in despair?"
