I was standing on the mountain with the sun on my back
And the shadow I was casting made the world seem black
And if the shadow of one now can block out the sun
Then you’d better make sure that you cast the right one

You can hustle to your left
You can hustle to your right
But you gotta put your back into something sometime
And it can send you down the river maybe tear you apart
But the only path is the path with heart

So I don’t care what the weather men say
You’ve got to parry with the weather till the end of your days here
And if the only path is a path with heart
Then I lucked into a good head start
Good head start

I felt I’d been down every alley
Beaten down every door
Till I could barely account for what I’d been looking toward
And then she took a turn into my record store
And I knew I wasn’t gonna have to look anymore

So I don’t care what the weather men say
You’ve got to parry with the weather till the end of your days here
And if the only path is a path with heart
Then I lucked into a good head start
Good head start

And it’s all about the context that you put things in
That you put us in, that we put ourselves in
Nothing hurts like a context
That you don’t want to be in
That’s a cage that I never want to see us all in

So I don’t care what the weather men say
You’ve got to parry with the weather till the end of your days here
No I don’t care what the weather men do
I can parry any weather much better with you
And if the only path is a path with heart
Then I lucked into a good head start

    My Interpretation

**Apologies in advanced for spelling/grammar mistakes and sentences that may not make a whole lot of sense. But hopefully you can get something out of it.

For me He sends the message that having an open heart is a good way to go through life. Regardless of what the world throws at you. And that it will give you a “good head start” in life.

“You can hustle to your left, You can hustle to your right, But you gotta put your back into something sometime”. You can blame it on this and that, or others, try and rearrange things around you to make yourself feel better about your situation avoiding responsibility. But at the end of the day you have to put in to get anything in return. And even though “it can send you down the river maybe tear you apart” don’t let that change you, make you close your heart and become bitter, because “The only path is the path with heart”. you learn to live with those scares and to stay true to yourself.

“So I don’t care what the weather men say, You’ve got to parry with the weather till the end of your days here” you have to work with what you’ve got, learn to live with what is given to you. He send the message saying who cares with what the weatherman (those that tell you its going to be a cloudy day, aka a shitty day) you can’t let bad things stop you and drag you down. Because you’re always going to have weather (shit days) so you may as well learn to open your heart to them and learn to work through them. There is always hope and always a tomorrow.

“I felt I’d been down every alley, Beaten down every door, Till I could barely account for what I’d been looking toward, And then she took a turn into my record store, And I knew I wasn’t gonna have to look anymore” he looked everywhere searching for a reason for an excuse or cure. He had lost his way, looking for meaning in what he was doing, forgotten something and couldn’t find it. He fell in love and his heart opened. Helping him to find meaning again.

“And it’s all about the context that you put things in” for me context in this song talks about situations/ places people are in during their life. “Nothing hurts like a context, That you don’t want to be in, That’s a cage that I never want to see us all in” and sometimes we don’t think there’s a way out of our situation, because our actions, past experiences or views on life act as bars in our cage.

“I was standing on the mountain with the sun on my back, And the shadow I was casting made the world seem black” turned his back on life (the sun) and he’s view of the world (the shadow he was casting) and his thoughts were dark. Or maybe he had turned his back to his future and was focusing on his past and not his future, which is bright and full of opportunities to change. “If the shadow of one man can block out the sun then you better make sure you cast the right one.” You have to make it count, you never know what you’re missing or who your effecting with your shadow. Your, our, actions and attitudes are powerful, so make it positive, heartfelt and meaningful not just for you but those around you as well.

“No I don’t care what the weather men do, I can parry any weather much better with you” the bad days dont seem so bad and what others say slides of like water on a ducks back. With an open heart you gain strength and the light you shine will scare way ‘Haters’ (I think thats what people call them). You become happy within yourself so you can accept who you are and have empathy and compassion for others.

Mortal of the song in my view and this is only my view. Life is better when you find meaning in yourself and with an open heart. Which is hard sometimes but going through life bitter and twisted thinking that people are out to hurt you is no way to live. And when you are truly happy or have an open honest heart what others say won’t hurt as much.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

When We Were Young
Blink-182
This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
