fog fell on his eyes
lost his name
lost his way

he went
into the woods
to find some truth
something new

he spoke
up at the sky
no words came out
no words came down

this song reminds me of the end of douglas copeland's novel, life without god. the book's protagonist recalls all these instances in his life that lead him to believe his life is spiritually void. it ends with him venturing into the wilderness to find himself in relation to a higher power. as far as this song figures, that character might, in fact, not find what he was looking for. pretty bleak. but i think rather than interpreting this as a song that straight up reflects atheism or the idea that god doesn't exist, i think you also have to be open to the idea that the writer may be alluding to the idea that spiritual meaning isn't something that we can always demand on the spot. it requires a lifetime to gain meaning or truth.. even then, we may not ultimately find it. but it's the earnest seeking out of it that matters most.
