Cold is the night without you here
just your absence ringing in my ears.
Hard is the heart that feels no fear
cause without the bad, the good disappears.

Long is the road that leads me home
and longer still when I walk alone.
Bitter is the thought of all that time
spent searching for something I'll never find.

Take this burden away from me,
and bury it before it buries me.

Many are the days I've wanted to cease
lay myself down and find some relief.
Heavy is the head that gets no sleep
we carry our lives around in our memories.

Take away this apathy,
and bury it before it buries me.

Steady is the hand that's come to terms
with the lessons it has had to learn.
I've seen the things that I must do
but Lord, this road is meant for two,
so I am waiting here for you.

Take my hand and set me free
Take my burdens and bury them deep
Take my burden away from me
and bury it before, bury it before
bury it before it buries me.

    My Interpretation

I really created a whole account and then typed out an entire comment, just to accidently drop my phone and lose the entire thing, but I really really wanted to say something about this song, here of all places, in hopes of finding someone like me who is scouring the internet searching for some meaningful commentary on piece of art. But because I deleted a really long comment, now I'm dictating to my phone because I don't want to write the whole thing out. So if some parts sound weird, blame my phone.

Cold is the night isn't a spectacular musical piece, and neither is it meant to be. It's a simple, comfortable song, with more of an emphasis on the lyrics of the song which connects to deep feelings that are often very hard to communicate. Don't get me wrong, I love the music, and it's an amazing song. One more thing before I start explaining the lyrics, I'm very deeply religious person, and I care very much about my face. I'm a born again christian, and I think the Christian themes and biblical Illusions in the oh hello songs are amazing.

For people who are non-religious, this song is about loneliness, and emptiness it makes you feel. Loneliness can often be burdensome to the point where it's unbearable, which is why you get lines like "many are the days I've wanted to cease " or lines about the loneliness being a burden that will bury you. It's deeply relatable, but it's also a feeling that is so isolating that it's hard for people to understand how difficult it is. There's also a deep longing in this song for a companion, for someone who will walk with you and understand you. But this feels impossible sometimes, which is reflected in the lines "bitter is the thought of all that time spent searching for something I'll never find." This song is so sorrowful, and the narrator is desperate for her pain to end.

That brings me to my biblical interpretation of the song, which kind of reads into it a little bit more, and I'm sort of inserting it into my experience. I think this song is a prayer of sorts. "Take away this burden." There's a plea for relief, to be saved from the heaviness of our loneliness and emptiness. One of my favorite lines, and something I find myself praying when I listen to this song, is "Take away this apathy and bury it before it buries me." This was something that I had been unconsciously praying for a long time, but now this song has given me the words for it and knowing how it feels is so much more relieving. As a believer, we spend a lot of time just waiting and hoping to be in heaven. Our lives here are difficult, lonely, and exhausting. But we are able to look to someone who can resolve all of that for us, and we get to walk with him forever in heaven at the end of time. Lord of this road is meant for two, so I am waiting here for you. We can't do life alone, and we're not meant to. As christians, we get to walk with Jesus, who's a better friend than anyone in this world. In a way, this song is hopeful and reassuring to us but it is still a reminder of the heavy burdens we Face everyday as a normal human in this world. "Without the bad, the good disappears." If we didn't have this life now, we would never get to know him.

This might have been very long and I might have over interpreted the message a little. The bit at the end there was mostly just relating it to my experience, I'm not saying that was necessarily in the song, although a lot of the ideas were there. If someone else is looking for a similar interpretation of this song and wants to talk about it, I'd love to talk. That's all I have to say now.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
