"Nothing That Has Happened So Far Has Been Anything We Could Control" as written by and Kevin Parker....
Nothing that has happened so far has
Been anything we could control
I have just been waiting for the perfect
Time to tell you I don't know
Maybe I'm just reading into it a
Little deeper than I should
We would make it easy we would take
It slowly if only we could

Hey, what are you doing out here?
You're thinking about everything, aren't you?
I know it's crazy, but just don't think of it like that
Nothing has to mean anything
Come on, come back inside

Elodie
Look at me
Unless you're trying to hurt me
Heavy blow
Down I go
Now I just want to let go

Is it right?
Is it wrong?
I don't know
It's not the cause I'm fighting for
Anymore
But it sucks to keep on running
Eventually
There will be
A time for clearer thinking
For now I weep
Can't get to sleep
I try to hold a good feeling
I just get one
Here it comes
There it goes
Now we just might
Lose the fight, yeah
But it's alright
It wasn't our decision

Nothing that has happened so far
Has been anything we could control
I am just here waiting for the perfect
Time to tell you what I know
Every man is happy until
Happiness is suddenly a goal
I'll just be here waiting 'til the
Doctor calls and then I'll let you know

General CommentThink it's about going crazy. Everything starts to fall apart and spiral out of control and you just don't understand why. You think you might be overthinking, but you can't take it easy, even though you want to.

And that only person you beg to help you (in this case Elodie), the only person who could fix you turns his/her back on you and it worsens the situation. You just want to explain what you're going through, make him/her understand...but (s)he just doesn't care to listen....All you want now is to make it stop, to let go, to make this - whatever you're feeling - go away but you don't know how or can't and "it sucks to keep on running".

You try to stay hopeful, tell yourself "Eventually, there will be a time for clearer thinking", you try to think of something positive, but feelings of happiness just float pass you, leaving you weeping and sleepless, tired of everything. It's just something you cannot control. At some point you fall apart completely and admit that you really are going out of your mind and you choose to "lose the fight".

And so you give up and seek help elsewhere (seek medical attention) and stay kind of static or idle, until you start feeling better again. You let your arms down and just wait for all this to be over, as sad as it is.
But somewhere deep inside you still hope to one day tell that person who left you bleeding in solitude, how you felt ("I'll just be here waiting till the
Doctor calls and then I'll let you know") and how hard it was for you, in hope that maybe that person will feel sorry for what (s)he had done. Kind of a little revenge.

This described so perfectly what I was going through when I had a mixed episode of bipolar disorder and was let down by someone who meant so much...It was super hard but eventually my state of mind cleared. I found so much comfort in this (and other Tame Impala) songs. Ãœberawesome band!

General CommentI think the song is about falling in love, and the rollercoaster of emotions that comes with it, one minute your happy/joyful and excited...whereas in the next you can feel really insecure/down and almost hurt. When the person dosen´t seem to respond.
But he is very uncertain, weather or not he should tell her how he feels
Even the music in this song describes it so well, Kevin Parker is a genius!

P.S. Don´t know if it´s true, but I suppose this could be about the french singer Melody Prochet (aka Melody´s Echo Chamber), Kevin worked with, who eventually became a couple
I always thought he cleverly wrote Elodie/ instead of Melody. But that´s just personal speculation...this is one of my fave songs of the entire album..which is so fantastic!

General CommentMaybe I'm just reading into it a
    Little deeper than I should.

personally, I think it's about living in a conditioned society with no meaning. The narrater has finally realized he lives in a world that he has no power over his world, but is conditioned to believe he does. we are not living our true nature, but one created by falsities in a world of corporate indoctrination.

    Every man is happy until
    Happiness is suddenly a goal.

once somebody realizing the true nature of happiness, they then are filled with deep depression because true happiness is unattainable.

My InterpretationI'm not sure if this is any where near right, but I've always thought of this song being about an unplanned pregnancy. Something that is out of their control

    "we would take
It slowly if only we could."

it's too late to take it slowly

"Is it right? Is it wrong? I don't know. It's not the cause I'm fighting for any more, but it sucks to keep on running."

It doesn't matter if what's happened is right or wrong any more, they have to face their situation head on.

    "It wasn't our decision."

Thinking about whether they did the right thing is irrelevant because it wasn't something they decided. They might 'lose the fight' against those who think they've done wrong, but that's okay because it's not their fault and it's out of their control.

    "Every man is happy until
    Happiness is suddenly a goal."

When a man has to think about raising a family he often starts thinking about wanting the best for them and wanting to be happy. This is the realisation that he was happy before and making happiness a goal is just over thinking and won't make him any happier.

"I'll just be here waiting till the
Doctor calls and then I'll let you know."

This last fading line is really what made me rethink the song and interpret it in this way. It seems like a very clear link to the idea of an unplanned pregnancy. But maybe what we realise here is that they didn't even know if that is what has happened yet. They are still waiting for the doctor to call. So all of this conversation and emotions might have just been over thinking.

Whether I am on the right track or not I think this song brilliantly portrays the chaos of human emotions and the need to let go sometimes and stop thinking so deeply. The lyrics and music are genius and it was absolutely awesome played live as an encore :D

My InterpretationThis song is about losing your mind and over thinking everything. It's also about the healing process, trying hard to feel like you once did and being hopeful and also wanting somebody by you that understands you, but while you're sat there waiting to feel normal again, you suddenly realise how insignificant you are and how naive about life you once were.

This song means a lot to me, because I went through everything that I wrote above, and I'm still going through it now, alone. If you know anyone who suffered or suffers from a mental illness, try to help and support them.

    Peace out.

My InterpretationThe next song in the album, "sun's coming up" talks about a person dying of cancer. Maybe this one is from that person's perspective...
    And we just might,
    Lose the fight, yeah
    But it's alright
    It wasn't our decision
    ...

I'll just be here waiting till the
Doctor calls and then I'll let you know.
