No one wants to weigh things down
But they tend to fly away and rescue teams will look for days
I like the way things are
I say abandon the search
Ford off the rough small work
Until then, Until then
Until they've reason to
Think I've a shot at redemption
Until then I'm not talkin'
Yes but remember this
It's always been a long shot or worse
Fordin' off the rough small work
I don't mean to weigh things down

But fortune telling, let's just see
When it all comes true we'll see
Until then, Until then
Until they've reason to
Think I've a shot at redemption
Until then I'm not talkin'

No I've never been close, I thought you should know
No I've never been close, I want you to know
No I've never been close, I've never been close
But I've never been far away
No I've never been close, I've never been close
But I've never been far away

I like the way things are
Time to abandon the search
Ford off the rough small work
Until then, Until then
Until they've reason to
Think I've a shot at redemption
Until then I'm not talkin'

    Song Fact

A.C. Newman said this in an A.V. Club story:

"This song is fairly self-explanatory in its narrative. In between family tragedy and the approaching birth of my son, I found myself in a strange in between space where the things I had always strived for (perfect happiness, success, being the best at what I do) were suddenly not nearly as important as just holding onto what I had."

    My Interpretation

Commenting on his failed relationship, the songwriter, humbly "the author of the small work," requests that all the rumors and speculation regarding what went wrong cease and that until people stop judging him with their preconceived notions he has nothing to say.

The next verse addresses possible reconciliation, hinting that the gossip is not helping this possibility. Emotions are in flux and the outcome is still unknown.

The shortened verse (middle 8?) conveys that although the relationship may of lacked true intimacy, he is still there for his partner if needed.

So is this affair truly over? Or will it be repaired and grow even stronger? It is at present in turmoil and transition and only time will tell.

This song has such great retro appeal. It reminds me of 'alone again or," by Aurthur Lee with the Latin horns and has the country folk feel of Nilsson of Glen Campbell. Wonderful tune.

    My Opinion

I am an Adult with ADD, I always will have the struggle of not saying the wrong thing, inappropriate, hurtful or stupid, This song brings back the painful childhood memories of swearing to myself to just not say anything. That someday I might fit in and be able to redeem myself. Of seeing life from the sidelines and not engaging to keep myself from being hurt Physically or emotionally. I remember dreaming of the future when it will all make sense and hoping that maybe I will grow out of it. But now with failed relationships due mainly to low self esteem ( thanks to the miserable teachers that told me I deserved the treatment I got from other students) I have struggled with this everyday. I am now in a loving relationship , but still struggle with low self esteem, and with the loving understanding from my wife I think I may redeem myself and not stay on the sidelines and be as close as the songwriter sings about and I am not as faraway as I think.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
