I bet
This time of night you're still up
I bet
You're tired from a long hard week
I bet
You're sittin' in your chair by the window
Looking out at the city
And I bet
Sometimes you wonder 'bout me

And I just wanna tell you
It takes everything in me not to call you
And I wish I could run to you
And I hope you know that every time I don't
I almost do
I almost do

I bet
You think I either moved on or hate you
'Cause each time you reach out there's no reply
I bet
It never ever occurred to you
That I can't say "Hello" to you
And risk another goodbye

And I just wanna tell you
It takes everything in me not to call you
And I wish I could run to you
And I hope you know that every time I don't
I almost do
I almost do

Oh, we made quite a mess, babe
It's probably better off this way
And I confess, babe
In my dreams you're touching my face
And asking me if I wanna try again with you
And I almost do

And I just wanna tell you
It takes everything in me, not to call you
And I wish I could run to you
And I hope you know that every time I don't
I almost do
I almost do
Uh-uh-uh

I bet
This time of night you're still up
I bet
You're tired from a long hard week
I bet
You're sittin' in your chair by the window
Looking out at the city
And I hope
Sometimes you wonder 'bout me

    I really hope that this song is about Adam Young (Owl City). I know that he still has feelings for her, and as a huge fan of them both I would love this to be her second song about him. Enchanted was so perfect and his reply just made it so much better. Some general hints to why I think it may be about him;

    1. "I bet this time of night you’re still up" - possible hint to Adam's self-confessed insomnia? Taylor is obviously staying up late at night thinking about him.

    2. "I bet you’re sitting in your chair by the window, looking out at the city" - sitting by the window looking out always sounds like something Adam would do, he's a very thoughtful individual and this comes across in his songs. Also maybe just me wishing too hard, but the way she sings "out at the city" almost sounds like Owl City maybe I don't know.

    3. "I bet you think I either moved on or hate you ‘Cause each time you reach out there’s no reply" - Adam never received a reply to his Valentine's day gift of the cover of Enchanted "I never heard back from Taylor but I'm sure she's busy." and I'm sure somewhere he said she stopped replying to his e-mails as well.

    4. "We made quite a mess, babe It’s probably better off this way" - There's one interview when asked why Adam and Taylor stopped speaking he said "I don't know. I think I'm not the most romantic and eloquent guy in the world. She's just this endearing, wonderful girl and maybe I said something wrong, who knows. It went on for 3 or 4 months, something like that."

    5. The clue in Taylor's album booklet was "Wrote this instead of calling" - Adam has often admitted that he's so shy that he finds telephone calls awkward or uncomfortable so that may be pointing to that, on Adam's blog regarding his reply to Enchanted he chose to record her song rather than call her.

"That song is sort of about pining away for if you're ever going to see someone again, walking away too early," she told me. "It was about this guy that I met in New York City, and I had talked to him on email before, but I had never met him. And meeting him, it was just this overwhelming feeling of: I really hope that you're not inlove with somebody. And the whole entire way home, I just remember the glittery New York City buildings passing by and then just sitting there thinking, am I ever gonna talk to this person again? It was that feeling of pining away for a romance that may never even happen, but all you have is this hope that it could, and the fear that it never will." - Taylor Swift regarding Enchanted

I'd like to pick out that she said she left too soon which would relate to her not wanting to have to say another goodbye in relation to I Almost Do.

So yeah, maybe just wishful thinking on my part but what do you think?

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
